Nobody has been looking forward to Live Free Or Die Hard as much as I.  Die Hard is still by far the greatest action film of all time.  It's smart, fun, and violent.

But sadly, it's official:

Live Free Or Die Hard is now rated PG-13:

http://joblo.com/dh4-officially-pg13

They just lost my ticket, and the ticket of anyone else I know.  I'm boycotting this film starting now.  I refuse to eat at Arby's from this point on (who is sponsoring the film) and any company related to the film.

You don't make John Mclane PG-13

Ugh!  Egad!  Gasp!  Other non-words!

Well, looks like I'll be joining you in your boycott.  Damn.

Oddly, I was just thinking about the PG-13 rating last night while watching Gremlins.  Like many MPAA edicts, the intention was good and it worked for a time.  But I am getting really fücking tired of producers of adult-themed films, films that should be rated R, cutting the material down until it reaches the PG-13.  Sure, this is more profitable in the short run, but the movies are not as good as they should have been.  And they wonder why people download these things illegally.

Considering it was directed by Len Wiseman, the 'genius' responsible for Underworld and Underworld 2 [which admittedly aren't terrible films, but nothing in the class to be deemed Die Hard worthy], I never truly got my hopes up.  Even if the trailer looked great.

A friend of mine directed me to youtube in which 'ten minutes of Live Free or Die Hard' was shown.  I didn't watch it but he was sadly less than impressed.

Still holding out some hope though.

My question is, how can you rate it PG-13 if the saying for the passed 3 movies was "yippie-kai-yea, motherfncker"?  Anyway, when it comes out on DVD, they have an "unrated" version.

I'm sure they'll still have McLane saying his signature line.

Here is the official MPAA description of the PG-13 rating.

"PG-13 is thus a sterner warning to parents, particularly when deciding which movies are not suitable for younger children. Parents, by the rating, are alerted to be very careful about the attendance of their under-teenage children. A PG-13 film is one which, in the view of the Rating Board, leaps beyond the boundaries of the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, or other contents, but does not quite fit within the restricted R category. Any drug use content will initially require at least a PG-13 rating. In effect, the PG-13 cautions parents with more stringency than usual to give special attention to this film before they allow their 12-year-olds and younger to attend. If nudity is sexually oriented, the film will generally not be found in the PG-13 category. If violence is too rough or persistent, the film goes into the R (restricted) rating. A film's single use of one of the harsher sexually derived words, though only as an expletive, shall initially require the Rating Board to issue that film at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive must lead the Rating Board to issue a film an R rating, as must even one of these words used in a sexual context. These films can be rated less severely, however, if by a special vote, the Rating Board feels that a lesser rating would more responsibly reflect the opinion of American parents.

PG-13 places larger responsibilities on parents for their children and moviegoing. The voluntary rating system is not a surrogate parent, nor should it be. It cannot, and should not, insert itself in family decisions that only parents can make. Its purpose is to give pre-screened informational warnings, so that parents can form their own judgments. PG-13 is designed to make parental decisions easier for films between PG and R."

Well, yes, technically the MPAA system is nothing more than suggestive guidelines.  But as we all know, theatres take it upon themselves to restrict admission to features based on these suggestions, thus depriving film producers the economic ecstasy to be had from the suburban, braindead, mellon-farming teenager demographic.  It isn't that sex and violence automatically make or break a film, but Die Hard is simply not suitable for that demographic.  It is an adult-oriented action picture and should behave as such.

In all fairness to the soulless studios, this is a business.  But I think self-censorship weakens the credibility of the film, which in the long run, will affect its profitability in other mediums.  Sure, theatrically the film is available to a wider audience, but the film itself is weaker and destined to obscurity.  When making Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Tobe Hooper was shooting for a PG.  And really, if you think about it, it is a very mild film: no profanity, no blood, no sex.  TCSM, of course, is also horrific and frightening and very much deserving of an R-rating.  But imagine for a moment if Hooper had cut his film to get that PG.  It would hardly have become the cult classic it is today.  No sequels, no knock-offs, no remakes, no residuals.

First it was the Terminator, then it was Rocky, soon it'll be Rambo and now it's Die Hard... what in the name of Robot Rex Reed is going on here. Initially I said, "No way am I going to see a sequel for a franchise that by all rights ended over a decade ago just because Hollywood thinks that Americas new found interest in terrorism (combined with the Hollywood lack of creativity in the last 6 or 7 years) will help sell another sequel"... and yes, I said "parenthesis" when making that statement...

Then I saw the trailers and, though I've been burned on bullsh!t trailers before, I gradually started getting interest. I was giving in to the hype machine one commercial at a time...

Then this PG-13 crap came into the picture and any and all interest I had, like everybody else here, immediately shot straight through my foot and into somebody's septic tank 10 feet under the ground beneath me.

Normally I wouldn't denounce a movie simply because it lacks the sex, violence and vulgarity to warrant an 'R' rating, but when it's John McClane, seriously, did they think they could edit for a PG-13 and not get backlash from the fans!? Is it possible Bruce Willis himself had anything to do with this? I know sometimes actors go soft because they don't want to make movies their own kids couldn't otherwise see... then again that wouldn't make any sense given Sin City...

Meh, I got plenty of other crap that $10 they just freed up can go to instead now. William Hung CD here I come!

Come now Ash, we both know that my manipulations are far more subtle than making someone post William Hung clips. I prefer to stick more to convincing women I meet online to send me naked photos of themselves... and making people post William Hung clips on message boards... oops. heh heh

I read  an interview with Bruce Willis in which he's claiming that people are going to be pleasantly surprised with how in-your-face the new Die Hard is and that it pushes the rating quite hard.

He also stated that now you are allowed to drop 2 F bombs in a PG-13 movie instead of just 1 so maybe he'll get to say his classic line after all.

I saw it this afternoon  I was very pleasently surprised. It had all the action of a Die Hard Movie the only thing that was held back was the language there were no F bombs sorry to disappoint fellow Die Hard fans but the famous line is censored. That was the only thing about the movie I didn't like. Other than that I loved it and felt like it belongs with the other three Die Hard movies rating not withstanding.
