NOW ON DVD
TWO NEW FILMS FROM
THE CUBAN MASTERWORKS COLLECTION

THE ADVENTURES OF JUAN QUIN QUIN
(LAS AVENTURAS DE JUAN QUIN QUIN)
DIRECTED BY JULIO GARCÍA ESPINOSA

In this wildly anarchic comedy, Juan Quin Quin survives on his wits in pre-revolutionary Cuba as an altar boy, a circus performer, a bull-fighter, a coffee planter – the poor but shrewd farmer even plays the part of Christ with a traveling theatre company. As the Revolution begins, a comic series of injustices leads Juan to the Sierra to become a guerrilla leader – albeit a bungling one. The Adventures of Juan Quin Quin is a ground-breaking comedy and one of the most popular films in the history of Cuban cinema.

Bonus Features:
Award-winning Short Film: Por primera vez • Photo Gallery • Director Biography & Filmography

“Irresistible and irrepressible…entertaining and accessible while engaging directly the politics of revolution and the politics of cinema.” – TORONTO INT’L FILM FESTIVAL

“A giddily inventive mix of classic movie genres and styles!” – PACIFIC CINEMATHEQUE

“Gives anarchic comedy a whole new dimension.”
– MICHAEL CHANAN, THE OXFORD HISTORY OF WORLD CINEMA

A SUCCESSFUL MAN
(UN HOMBRE DE ÉXITO)
DIRECTED BY HUMBERTO SOLÁS

From Humerto Solas, the acclaimed director of Lucia, comes one of the most influential Cuban films of all time.  Chronicling 30 years of Cuban politics and history, this epic has been compared to Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather and the grand cinema of Luchino Visconti. Solás follows the lives of two brothers separated by ideology and ambition, while whisking us through three decades of glitter, corruption and the decline of the middle-class ending with the Cuban revolution. With its themes of corruption vs. innocence, power vs. morality, and idealism vs. opportunism, A Successful Man offers a complex look at the roots of the Cuban revolution.

Bonus Features:
Nostalgia Cha Cha Cha: The history of the Cha Cha in 50’s Cuba • Photo Gallery • Director Bio & Filmography

WINNER! GRAND PRIZE – HAVANA FILM FESTIVAL

“Blessed with Solás’ meticulous attention to detail. Havana, replete with all the trappings of bourgeois opulence, is reconstructed time and again to recreate periods from 1932 to the beginning of the Cuban revolution…[Solás is] one of Cuba’s top directing talents.”
– VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

WORLD CINEMA FROM THE GLOBAL LENS COLLECTION
The Award Winning Film From Brazil
CINEMA, ASPIRINS AND VULTURES
Available on DVD July 24, 2007

Evoking a lost time and innocence, this warmly told road film from director Marcelo Gomes finds two intrepid travelers intent on making the most of whatever life throws into their path.

Johann, a young German, has fled to Brazil to avoid World War II. Living in his truck in the country’s remote, arid, northeastern region, he drives from village to village peddling aspirin, which he promotes by showing films of the miracle cure-all. Along the way, he picks up a hitchhiker, the sharp-tongued Ranulpho, who has left the drought and suffering of his region in search of a better life.

Johann hires Ranulpho as his assistant, and at first, the two seem worlds apart. Johann embraces the adventure of his nomadic life and dreams under the stars, while Ranulpho complains about the miserable, sun-bleached country he has known all his life and dreams of getting a job in glamorous Rio de Janeiro. Nevertheless, after many long days on the road with only the scratchy voice on the radio to remind them of the distant war, an unlikely friendship develops between the two men.

Then Brazil enters the war against Germany and Johann receives a notice that, as a German citizen, he must return home or surrender to a concentration camp in São Paulo. War, we are reminded, is as close as Johann’s radio, broadcasting its relentless warnings that all lives are changed when the world is in conflict.

An official selection (Un Certain Regard) of the 2005 Cannes Film Festival and Brazil’s Foreign Language Film submission to the 2007 Academy Awards, Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures will be released on DVD as part of First Run Features’ Global Lens Collection on March 20, 2007.

Marcelo Gomes was born in Recife, in Northeastern Brazil. He studied filmmaking at Bristol University in the United Kingdom and produced his first short, Maracutu Maracutus, in 1994, winning numerous prizes, including Best Short Film at the Brasilia film festival. He produced the documentaries Punk, Rock, Hard Core (1996) and Expresso Brazil (1997). The script for Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures (Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus), his first feature film, was a finalist at the Sundance Institute screenplay competition.

The Global Film Initiative promotes cross-cultural understanding through cinema. Each year, ten films from developing countries are selected to tour the United States as part of the Global Lens Film Series, playing at prestigious cultural institutions such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Chicago’s Gene Siskel Film Center, and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. The films that best highlight the annual tour are then released on DVD as part of the Global Lens Collection. Each DVD includes special bonus features which place the film in the context of the developing world, the country of origin and its emerging cinema.
