Would Harve Bennett have approved of this, I wonder?
He wanted to make a similar film in 1990 that would have preceded STV1 involving Kirk going back to the StarFleet Academy and addressing the class of the future and telling them in flashback, how things all started between him, Bones and Spock, his long lost love and it would have ended with Spock and Kirk meeting at Kirk's long lost love's graveside, the two embracing and the final shot would have been Scotty beaming them up to the Enterprise, ready for another mission.
As William Shatner tells it in
Star Trek Movie Memories it would have packed quite an emotional wallop but Paramount wanted a classic adventure for the 25th Anniversary, Paramount boss Marvin Davis freaked and demanded one too, Bennett was offered a huge deal to make a classic adventure and refused, then left when his contract expired.
As a Trekkie / Trekker from way back, I would have loved to see this.
