This movie, based on Frederick Forsythe's novel, is a great model for screenwriting and film editing.  Every scene is trim and lean and there isn't a single wasted word of dialogue or frame of film.

Edward Fox plays an assassin known only as "The Jackal."  He is hired by the OAS to assassinate French President Charles DeGaulle.  The storyline switches back and forth between the Jackal plotting the assassination and the French authorities trying to figure out who he is and when he will strike.  Director Fred Zinneman masterfully builds suspense from the beginning of the movie right up to the climax.  This is one espionage thriller that doesn't rely on a lot of high-speed car chases, gunfights, and noisy explosions.  It's just a well-written, classy piece of filmmaking.  Highly recommended.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it.

The novel is a great read too!  Possibly Forsythe's best, though I really like The Fourth Protocol too.

This is a good one Burgomaster. Didn't like the ending, but overall well worth watching.  Thumbup Thumbup

Another great film, which should have never been remade.
