Rather than post on the other Lost thread, I thought I'd post an "official" Lost thread here that goes into much more detail.

To those of you who haven't watched Lost, you're missing out!

I caught the pilot when it first aired and then lost interest.
Then I saw the first season finale and it had me hooked.
I started watching the show religiously at the start of the second season and have stayed with it ever since.
It is one of the best written and most fascinating shows I've ever seen.

To give you a broad outline as to what's happening so far, I've quoted the synopsis for seasons 1, 2 and 3.
I've posted them on three seperate posts to break up the monotony and give you a better idea as to what the show's all about.

I highly recommend you take the time to get to know the characters.
Lost has a monster-sized cast and a deep, complex storyline.
It may take you awhile to go through all of this, but it's totally worth it.   Smile

This thread will get you up to speed as to what's going on in the show.

(everything in italics in posts 1,2 and 3 of this Official LOST thread have been quoted from Wikipedia)

I added all of the links, pictures and videos
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Season 1

"On September 22, 2004, a plane breaks apart in mid-air, scattering survivors on a remote island somewhere in the South Pacific. A few dozen of these survivors, after the initial shock passes, attempt to set up a camp, and figure out where they are, but are disturbed by loud roaring noises and crashing trees emanating from the nearby jungle.

Three of the survivors set out to find the cockpit. An injured pilot, shortly before he dies, tells them that the plane had lost radio contact six hours after take off, turned back for Fiji and hit turbulence. The plane was a thousand miles off course when it crashed.

One of the survivors, an Iraqi Republican Guard communications officer named Sayid Jarrah, attempts to repair a transceiver. They take it to a higher point on the island in an attempt to get a signal, and are attacked by a polar bear along the way. When they finally do turn on the transceiver, they learn that its signal is being blocked by a transmission of a woman's voice speaking in French, which Shannon translates: "I'm alone now, on the island alone. Please someone come. The others are dead. It killed them. It killed them all." The message repeats, with a count implying that it has been repeating for over sixteen years (according to Sayid's computation).

Sayid finds a cable running out of the ocean and into the jungle. He follows it, but it results in him being trapped by a mysterious woman who takes him to a bunker and tortures him, asking where "Alex" is. She eventually identifies herself as Danielle Rousseau, the person who sent out the distress signal. Sayid eventually escapes, and over the course of the season, Rousseau has other intermittent contacts with the survivors, telling them more of her own story, such as that she was pregnant when she came to the island, but after she gave birth, "The Others" came and kidnapped her baby, with their arrival heralded by a column of black smoke.

Sayid

Hurley conducts a census of the survivors, and discovers that one of their castaways, Ethan Rom, is not on the passenger manifest. Ethan kidnaps Charlie and Claire, but then discards Charlie, since Claire was the one that "The Others" wanted. Locke eventually finds her. She doesn't initially remember her experience, but her memory slowly returns to her.

Locke discovers a mysterious hatch in the jungle with no handle, and becomes obsessed about what may be inside.
He and Boone spend many days digging it out of the ground, thinking of how to open it.
While exploring the island, Locke and Boone also discover a Beechcraft lodged on the side of a cliff. Boone climbs up the cliff and into the plane.
Inside, he finds a radio and sends a distress call. A male voice answers, "Is someone out there?" to which Boone responds, "We are the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815."
The voice replies, "We're the survivors of 815." The Beechcraft then falls from the cliff and badly injures Boone. Locke takes Boone back to the camp, but Jack is unable to save his life.

Locke & Boone

Michael decides to build a raft to escape with his son Walt, and they are joined by Sawyer and Jin. In the first night after launching, they are surprised and initially delighted to encounter another boat, but it turns out to be a group of the Others who demand that Walt be handed over to them. In the ensuing chaos, the raft is destroyed, Sawyer is shot, and Walt is kidnapped.

Walt & Michael

Rousseau leads a party of survivors to the Black Rock, a wooden ship in the middle of the island, containing a cache of dynamite which can be used to open the hatch. Along the way, one of them is chased by a black cloud, the "monster", which Rousseau calls the island's "security system."

The Black Rock

Rousseau

Jack and Locke bring the dynamite back to the hatch, and use it to force open the hatch door to look inside.
The season ends with them looking down into the darkness of the shaft below.

Locke, Kate & Jack looking down the shaft

By the end of season one, the group of survivors comprises over 40 people who have been on the island for 44 days (set at November 4, 2004)."

Season 2

"A prominent theme from the first scene of the season is the exploration of the Hatch that was discovered in Season 1.

It is revealed to be a scientific bunker of some sort, which has running water and electricity, is well stocked with food, and has a 1970s era computer, which, according to its previous occupant, Desmond, must have the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 typed into it every 108 minutes, or "the world will end."

The Numbers

Desmond Entering The Numbers Into the Computer

A black and white "flip card" timer on the wall counts the minutes down, and an alarm sounds four minutes before the deadline.

The Flip Card Timer

The survivors debate whether or not to trust Desmond's instructions, but set up shifts to keep watch.
They gradually learn through bits of filmstrip that what they had referred to as "the hatch" is actually the Swan station", one of several different DHARMA Initiative stations.

Desmond, after giving instructions about how to operate The Swan, flees.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Sawyer and Michael deal with the chaos after the attack on their raft, and the disappearance of Jin and Walt.
They create a makeshift raft from floating wreckage, and the currents push them back to the island, where they encounter a panicked Jin, and then the tail section survivors, who are led by Ana Lucía.

The Tail Section in the Water

She initially directs that Sawyer, Jin and Michael be held captive, but they eventually reconcile, and then all head together to the other side of the island to reunite with the rest of the survivors.
Along the way, they worry about contact with The Others, and in a moment of confusion, Ana Lucia shoots and kills Shannon.

Ana Lucia

------------------------------------------------

Claire learns how to be a new mother, and wrestles with whether or not to trust Charlie, who at one point suffers delusions that he has to protect the baby, but his actions in fact endanger the child. This is part of a theme of dreams and hallucinations that afflict many of the survivors, in ways both good and bad.

Claire & Charlie

-------------------------------------------------

The Others become a more visible presence in this season, though they often try to disguise their name and appearances. Tom, for example, wears a fake beard.
In one encounter with The Others, Tom tells the survivors, "This is not your island, this is our island, and the only reason you're living on it is because we let you live on it." He also scolds them for "opening doors that they shouldn't be opening".

Rousseau captures a man who identifies himself as "Henry Gale, from Minnesota", another castaway on the island who had arrived by balloon.
He insists at first that he is not one of The Others, but the survivors doubt his story, hold him captive in The Swan, and brutally interrogate him.
He maintains his story for several days, but finally confesses when faced with proof of his deception (the ID of the real Henry Gale), he admits that he is indeed one of "The Others".

"Henry Gale"

--------------------------------------

At the same time Locke, who became trapped before he could enter the number codes, asks Henry Gale to enter the codes by crawling through the air vents.
As the countdown reaches zero, a map appears on a blast door, detailing an octagonal arrangement of stations on the island.

Later, Gale claims to have never entered the code as everything returns to normal, tarnishing Locke's beliefs.

--------------------------------------------------

Following dreams and the map, Eko (pronounced "echo") and Locke discover the central "?"(Pearl Station), which appears to be a station designed to observe the occupants of the other stations.

The Pearl Station Orientation Video
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3ye8e-V32M

When they learn that its earlier occupants were tasked with observing their own Swan station, Locke believes that entering the numbers is merely a psychological experiment, and does not "save the world".
This puts Locke, who had originally been a strong proponent of entering the numbers, into a crisis of faith, but seems to make Eko even more sure of what he must do, and they switch roles.
Inside, Locke also finds a printout of the log entry of the numbers from the Swan computer.

Mr. Eko

Michael continues to seek his kidnapped son, Walt.
After an apparent conversation with his son on the computer in The Swan, he makes his way alone to find "The Others" at their camp.
He is allowed to spend three minutes with his son, who pleads for rescue.
They let Michael go, promising him Walt back, if he frees Henry, and brings only Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley back to their camp.

Michael Commits the Ultimate Betrayal
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5NJSspFtcQ

During the two survivors' memorial, Desmond returns in a sailboat, drunk.

Michael convinces Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley to join him in a raid against "The Others" to rescue Walt, but Sayid believes that Michael is leading the four into a trap and informs only Jack.
Sayid's plan is to use Desmond's sailboat to approach camp of "The Others" by water. He enlists the help of Jin, who knows how to sail, and Sun who will translate.

Despite Jack's foreknowledge of Michael's plans, "The Others" ambush and capture the raiding party. Henry, who turns out to have some authority among "The Others", fulfills the deal, freeing Michael and Walt and giving them a boat. As Michael is freed, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley learn fully of how he has betrayed them: he killed Ana Lucia and Libby, freed Henry, and now has delivered the four survivors to "The Others".
Hurley is freed and instructed to go back to his camp to tell the other survivors that they may never go back there.

The Others have captured Jack, Hurley, Kate & Sawyer

In the meantime, Sayid, Sun and Jin, arrive at The Others' camp, which has been abandoned. They discover a door to what appears to be another DHARMA Initiative station; however, it is fake. They start a signal fire, and wait for Jack and his party to rendezvous with them.

Locke and Desmond take over the The Swan station from Eko and prevent him from entering the numbers at the appointed time.
Both of them argue over the validity of the threat until the last minute when, looking at the log, Desmond realizes the last time the code was not put through was the day of the plane crash.

Desmond & Locke inside the Swan Station

When the timer reaches zero, a great magnetic field erupts, forcing several objects to fly towards a strong point of magnetism in The Swan.
Desmond says he is going to "save" Locke, and goes to the system termination station under the floor, which he activates by turning the key. The immediate result is not shown, but the entire island is enveloped by a white-violet light and a shrill humming sound.

This is what happens when you fail to "Push the Button"
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVNUb7Ie3_I

The season ends with a scene of a cramped polar research station where two men excitedly notice what appears to be the anomaly, and they proceed to phone Desmond's old fiancée, Penelope, to tell her that they have "found it".

By the end of the second season, the survivors have been on the island for 67 days (set at November 27, 2004)."

Season 3

"The third season continues 68 days after the crash of Oceanic Flight 815, set on September 22, 2004.

At the end of the second season, three of the crash survivors - Jack, Kate and Sawyer - were captured by the mysterious island inhabitants known as "The Others".
The Others' apparent leader is a man who was captured in the middle of the second season and used the alias "Henry Gale."
Meanwhile, near the survivors' camp on the beach, Locke, Mr. Eko, Charlie and Desmond argued over whether to continue entering the numbers into a computer in a workstation that was previously operated by a group of scientists known as the DHARMA Initiative. Locke became frustrated and destroyed the computer.
Desmond, in a panic, turned the failsafe key, which caused the station to implode and a purple light shone over the sky, which was accompanied by a harsh ringing sound.

Desmond Turns the Key

We learn the Others live in a compound of modern suburban houses in a previously unseen area of the island. Their leader appears to be Benjamin Linus, known as Henry Gale to the survivors.

Jack, Kate and Sawyer are imprisoned on a second island under video surveillance by Ben.
While Kate and Sawyer are caged and perform hard labor, Jack is interrogated by the Other Juliet, an obstetrician who wants off the island and is plotting against Ben.
Learning Ben has a spinal tumor, Jack operates and, with Ben at his mercy, bargains for Kate and Sawyer's successful release.

------------------------------

Other events:

Locke has visions of Boone, who tells him that Mr. Eko is in danger.
As a result of turning the failsafe key, Desmond begins to have premonitions of future events, and starts seeing Charlie die.

--------------------------------

Kate, Locke, Sayid and Rousseau go to save Jack, who is now with the Others at their main compound. En route, Locke destroys a DHARMA communications station called The Flame. They take the Flame's operator Mikhail, whom Locke apparently kills.

-------------------------------------

The team finds Jack, who is surprisingly happy because Ben has offered to take him off the island. Locke destroys the Others' submarine, and learns that Ben is holding his father, Anthony Cooper.
The Others, Locke and Cooper promptly leave the compound, while Jack, Juliet, Kate and Sayid return to the beach.

Other events:

Hurley finds and fixes a DHARMA-issue VW bus
Nikki and Paulo are paralyzed by spider venom, mistaken for dead, and buried alive.
Sun learns that Charlie and Sawyer worked to abduct her.
Claire plots to rescue everyone via message-laden seagulls, and we learn (via flashback and unbeknownst to her) that Christian Shephard is her father and that she and Jack are half-siblings.

Hurley Finds the DHARMA Bus

The unwelcome Juliet cures a suddenly ill Claire, and confirms that Jin is the father of Sun's child.
She also reveals that all pregnant women on the island die -- all while spying on the survivors and planning with Ben to kidnap the pregnant beach women in a week.

Can Juliet Be Trusted?

-----------------------------------------

Meanwhile, Desmond has a vision involving Penny Widmore and being rescued. After taking Hurley, Charlie and Jin into the jungle, a parachutist named Naomi lands, is injured, and claims to be hired by Penny to find Desmond. She reveals that, to her knowledge, Oceanic flight 815 had been found, with everyone still on board and declared dead.

Charlie & Desmond Care For Naomi

Other Events:

Mikhail appears, turning out not to be dead, and saves Naomi's life.

---------------------------------

Locke is urged by Ben to kill Cooper in order to become a greater person.
Locke does not, but, after learning from Richard that Cooper also caused the death of Sawyer's parents, finds Sawyer and ultimately manipulates him into killing Cooper in the brig of the Black Rock.

----------------------------------------------

Locke sends him back to the beach with a tape recorder revealing Juliet to be a spy, as well as news of the Others'  impending raid on the beach.

--------------------------------------------

Ben leads Locke to the cabin of the unseen leader of The Others, Jacob.
Inside, Ben speaks to an empty chair as if Jacob were in it.
Locke turns to leave, but hears a voice say, "Help me."

Later, Ben reveals he helped kill the original DHARMA group.

Season finale
Counterattack and rescue plans...

Naomi tells everyone of the rescue freighter 80 miles offshore, and that her satellite phone is being jammed.

A three-part plan is devised:

Jack will lead most of the survivors to the radio tower in order to shut off Rousseau's S.O.S.
Jin, Bernard, and Sayid will stay behind and kill the raiding party by detonating strategically-placed dynamite with gunfire
Charlie and Desmond will go to the underwater Looking Glass Station and shut off its jamming signal as well, though, according to a "flash" from Desmond, their mission's success means Charlie will die.

Charlie Goes To The Looking Glass
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfTVsjm_M10

--------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, we find Locke still alive, re-paralyzed and about to shoot himself, when a vision of Walt tells Locke he can walk, and that he has work to do.

Jack and the tower-bound group are intercepted by Ben and Alex.
Ben says Naomi is lying, and she will be the death of everyone on the island. Ben is taken captive, and Alex is introduced to Rousseau for the first time.

Charlie disables the jammer and speaks with Penelope via videophone -- she has no knowledge of Naomi. Mikhail, outside the station, detonates a hand grenade, causing Charlie to drown. Before dying, Charlie writes "Not Penny's Boat" on his hand and shows it to Desmond.

Rousseau disables her S.O.S. call. Naomi reaches her ship via a satellite phone -- but is killed by a now-walking Locke, who tells Jack they are not meant to leave the island.
Defiant, Jack speaks to the person on the phone, who says they will be there soon.

--------------------------------------------------

Parallel Story Season 3 Cliffhanger:
The parallel story in the season finale centers around Jack whose life is clearly a mess. He is addicted to Oxycodone, and drinks heavily.
His apartment is strewn with dozens of maps of what appears to be the Pacific Ocean, and many items that are marked "Oceanic".
After reading a newspaper clipping, the content of which is not visible on screen, he is distraught and attempts to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge.
Before he can jump, a car accident occurs behind him, and he rushes to the burning car to aid the victims. Later, in the hospital, the chief of surgery refuses to let him operate on the accident victim, seeing that he is apparently under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Jack denies that he is impaired and challenges the chief to fire him if he is "any drunker than my father upstairs", because his father, a fellow doctor, routinely drank on the job.

The newspaper clipping turns out to be a death notice - he goes to the funeral home in a lower income area of Los Angeles, and he is the only one there.
We do not see who the dead person is.
Jack declares himself neither friend nor family, but Jack is clearly overwhelmed with sadness or guilt about the death.
Throughout the story, Jack is seen trying to reach an unknown character on the phone. Near the end of the episode he gets in touch and arranges to meet the person who is revealed to be Kate, who meets him and talks to him, telling him he looks terrible.
Throughout the conversation, it becomes apparent that the parallel story has been a "flash-forward" to Jack's life after leaving the island, as opposed to a flashback.

Jack says to Kate "We have to go back" and Kate refuses.

Jack is tormented, stating that he felt that leaving was a mistake and they "weren't meant" to do it. Kate, still refusing to return, mentions that "he" will wonder where she is (she does not say who "he" is but it can be assumed to be Sawyer), gets back into her car, and drives away, ending the season with considerable speculation."

I watched the first and second seasons. Thought they were great.

I think about a third of the way through the last season I got bored with it. Each new episode introduced a new mystery and none of the old ones were answered. From the sound of Ash's summary though it sounds like there was a bit of action towards the end. Might be worth checking out  Smile

I realize that we're in the fourth season now, but if you haven't come back by now, you should give it some consideration.  My wife and I got snobby and turned our noses up at until a girl I work with practically forced it on me.  We caught up with the first three seasons over the last month and are now taking the necessary steps to catch up with the fourth season.

Season 3 was a real chose and the common complaint that I've heard and now echo is that the first half of the season seemed like not even the show's creators knew where they were going with it. They were just stringing us all along as if they were trying to buy themselves some time.  Halfway through, though, the show kicks into high gear and finds direction.  The finale was some of the best television I've ever seen.  It's relentless and intense.  I almost couldn't bear it.

I'd forgotten that I'd posted this thread.
(half the videos don't work anymore)

Season 4 was only supposed to be 8 or 9 episodes but apparently not.
Be sure to tune in April 24th because season 4 will be continuing.

It's getting really good!
They've provided more info about the island and its mysterious properties.
So far, from what I understand is that the island seems to be in a slightly different time...either a few hours ahead or behind.  It also kind of explains why Desmond is able to see into the future.

Michael has been brought back and we learn what happened to him after The Others let him leave the island with Walt.
He's been undercover on the freighter off the island and is working for Ben.

I'm still curious to know the motives of the team of scientists that have landed on the island.
They've certainly divided the Oceanic 815 survivors.
Half have gone to Locke's camp and the rest have stayed with Jack.

And in several flashforwards, we learn which six people eventually make it off the island...
They are: Jack, Hurley, Kate, Aaron, Sun, and Sayid.
How they get off the island is still a mystery.

Of course, there is some debate over the fact of Aaron, and whether they're going to consider him a "survivor" and thus, one of the Oceanic Six.  So, there might possibly be one more survivor.  Because if they do, then wouldn't they *technically* have to consider Sun's little girl a survivor?  As well as Jin, as he is buried off of the Island?  So Jin might have been considered one of the true Oceanic Six, and the children were not.

Then, I may be completely wrong too.

My theory on that.

The island's natural magnetism is pretty strong.  Like, crazy strong, evident in the way that the Swan imploded when Desmond used the failsafe.  Since the book titles dropped in the various episodes often play a role in where the show is going, A Brief History of Time plays into this: the magnetism of the island is bending space around the island.  Because of this, the island exists slightly out of step with the rest of the world.  Either a little bit behind or a little bit ahead.  That's why it's so hard to find the place.

I thought the first half of Season Three was a bit of a chore.  The eps mainly broke down like this Jack/Kate/Sawyer are captured.  The others abuse them a whole episode.  No one seems to ask any pertinent about what's really going on, Jack, giving an opportunity to get full disclosure from Juliet, is for some unknown, suddenly consumed with concerned about his ex-wife, and asks about instead of a simple, "What the hell is going on? Who are you people?" etc.  Another group of the Losties shows up on try and rescue them, said group is quickly captured, except for Locke who becomes the ultimate douchebag, again and again.  A character returns and a surprise that one is actually surprised is revealed between him and Sawyer.

Others just inexplicably decide to let everyone go.

And that's about two thirds of the first season.  :)
