This is interesting, some guy does this experiment where he buys several different types of McDonald's food, sticks them into separate glass jars, and then sees how they hold up over the next several weeks (in addition to a hamburger and fries bought from another place in town.)

What's really weird is the McDonalds dries don't seem to change much in the first several weeks, not sure why, but I do have some theories.. Were the fries still warm when he put them in there, I wonder?  I believe the condensation from the warmth of the food on the jars would help speed up the molding process, but if the fries were cold..

Dunno, though.

EDIT

Did some reading and found this...

"Butylhydroquinone keeps the french fries from decaying. TBHQ is a highly effective antioxidant for unsaturated vegetable oils and many edible animal fats. It does not change flavor nor odor of the material it is added to. It can be combined with other antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA). It is added to a wide range of foods, with highest limit (1000 mg/kg) permitted. Its primary advantage is enhancing storage life."

I'll have to take their word for it.

Yeah I saw this study and story about a week or so ago and I can say McD is one of those fast food places I don't go, it's been years since I've been to one. They are in my opinion the Wal-Mart if fast food and I avoid them ... so to me it wouldn't matter what they put it in, it will still have the distinctive nasty greasy Micky D's taste. I always though it was one fast food chain that had very identifiable odor to it. That I find very strange.

Just a note: this video is actually from Morgan Spurlock's DVD of Super Size Me.  I recall watching it as a special feature when the film first hit DVD.  Amazing experiment and one that scares the hell out of me.  I try to avoid McDonalds and the like whenever possible but sometimes quick grub is a must.

Have you ever found McDonald's burgers half eaten tucked in the backseat of your car? I have two preteens, and they have a nasty habit of stuffing wrappers and food under the seats. Anyway...they really don't decay or mold...they harden! Like hamburger mummies! You could play hockey with 'em!
