I don't know if anyone else watched, but man what a stinker.  It was pretty mundane stuff which in my book qualifies as really bad.  I can't believe with some of the really good series SciFi has put out in the last few years that they would buy 22 episodes of this crap.

It's been receiving terrible reviews by almost every TV critic out there.
Check out the abysmal ratings it got on Metacritic.

Dang, I hadn't heard anything about it until the bad reviews.  Sounds like I dodged a bullet there.

I watched it and found it to be very...blah. It was very slow moving. One can only hope that since it was the pilot and had to set things up, subsequent episodes will be livelier paced with some more scifi elements thrown in. I'm not gonna hold my breath, however.

At least it has some cute chicks, though. TeddyR

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

I watched the first half hour and was really bored, thought I tuned in for an episode of Dawson's Creek.

Blah is an cosmic understatement.  Of all the comments about this sciffy atrocity I've read one in particular sticks out in my mind as it made a very valid point, namely that Flesh Gordon was not only truer to the source material but more entertaining!

What the pilot episode proves is whoever is in charge over at sciffy not only knows nothing about science fiction in general (I can't even begin to imagine what kind of a brain dead git would green light such garbage) but apparently holds science fiction fandom in utter contempt.  It takes a special kind of dumba$$ to ruin Flash Gordon.  The kind of utter and complete buffoons that spend their time worshiping at the anus of Mammon.

As for the 'series' itself.  This is a blatant cheapie knock-off of Sliders written by writers who apparently confused "Flash Gordon" with DC comics "Flash" character.  Did we really need another sciffy show with CGI wormholes?  Sure the SFX are probably easier, not to mention cheaper, to do that rocket ships but, uhm, isn't that the point of Flash Gordon?  And don't even get me started on the evil effeminate accountant, er, Ming the Merciless character.  Ugh!

It's not like they couldn't do a proper rendition of Flash Gordon on a sciffy budget.  Star Trek: Voyager proved with their "Captain Proton" series within a series holo-deck episode it can be done.   What was aired, while not bad for a no budget student film, was an souless regurgitation of distilled boredom.  There weren't any fancy sets, the costumes were off the rack, and the poor actors didn't seem to have a clue what their characters were supposed to be about!

What I want to know is what did the producers use the budget on, crack whores?   Lookingup

I also caught an episode of this last week.  For some reason, I was pretty excited about it when I saw the ads, but I think that had something to do with the Queen theme song.  Turns out they didn't even use that, but a cover!  Damn it!

Sci Fi is so hot and cold with their original material.  They gravitate toward the cheapest stuff to produce which is such a huge bummer because when they really spend some money, they come out with outstanding shows like Galactica.

Couldn't have been more than two, since that's all that has been aired so far. Wink TeddyR

I'm still willing to give this series a chance to entertain me. I don't see it ever becoming a classic, or inspiring the rabid following other shows enjoy, but it might do well as popcorn TV: brainless fluff to divert your mind for an hour and then quickly forget.

Might have been both eps played back to back twice in a row on SciFi it was one of those things where I wasn't paying very close attention as it just wasn't that interesting.

I almost cried after seeing the pilot episode it just sucked that bad. I love the movie its one of my all time favorites, I never read the comics or seen the old serials but considering all the material they had to on, I can't belive they decided on rehashing Sliders.

Full disclosure:  I don't watch the Sci-Fi channel except for MST3K, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.  MST3K has long been cancelled, SG1 just got cancelled and neither were originally Sci-Fi shows.  Atlantis, as everyone should know, is a spin-off of SG1.  I only watched the pilot of Flash Gordon at the behest of my friend Mike, who graciously allows me to watch the aforementioned shows at his house on his TiVo (since I don't even get Sci-Fi anymore, thank you very much Comcast).

I actually sat through the entire pilot episode saying to myself, "Maybe it'll get better after the next commercial....", which of course it never did.  It got worse after every commercial!  I do not intend to ever watch another episode of this show.

Although that was a few weeks ago, a few things stick out in my mind.  I will mention the most egregious that I remember.

First, the title character is named "Flash".  I don't recall if the original comic gave an explanation for the name, but at least the 1980 movie had him as an NFL quarterback.  This stinking pile of new series shows Flash showing off his stuff by winning a freakin' marathon!  You know, a distance and stamina contest.  Ouch.

When we are first introduced to the Zarkov character, I didn't catch his name (probably because of the way he talks).  After a few more scenes with him, I paused the TiVo so I could pick my jaw off the ground when it suddenly hit me that this, this, this stupid retarded brain-damaged unnatural offspring of Christopher Lloyd's Reverend Jim and Randy Quaid's Cousin Eddie was supposed to be the super-genius Hans Zarkov!  Not only is this character an idiot, but he's cast as the Odious Comic Relief.  For example, every time he fires his 'proton gun' (or whatever techno-gibberish name they gave it) it makes a funny sound and an ineffective ball shoots out and proceeds to fly in curves without ever hitting the intended target.

As for Ming the Merciless:  Ming the Moderately Testy is a more apt description.  This guy is supposed to be the evil despot of an entire planet, destroying other planets and civilizations at a whim, yet here he is reduced to making empty threats and using underhanded business practices.  Kester Pelagius referred to him as "the evil effeminate accountant", which I think is an insult to anyone who is evil, effeminate or an accountant.  To put it bluntly, this guy sucks.  Shaggy and Scooby-Doo wouldn't be afraid of him.

And the music.  This "show" uses the Queen soundtrack from the 1980 movie, but covered by another band.  What's the point?  To sucker in people who liked the movie?

I could go on and on (and on and on and on...), but I think that everyone has grasped my point.  To sum up:  This show stinks.  No, make that this show STINKS.  Therefore, according to my cynical nature, it will probably be a big hit with regular Sci-Fi watchers.

One final note, not directly related to the show.  Kester Pelagius refers to the "Sci-Fi Channel" as "sciffy".  Man, I thought I was the only one who did that.   Wink

A friend who keeps track of TV ratings sent me this when I asked about the show:

Quote
The premiere was seen by 2.1 million viewers (or a 1.5 coverage/universe rating), the second by 1.1 million and no word on the actual rating. By comparison, Painkiller Jane premiered to a 1.3 coverage/universe rating and 1.5 million viewers and The Dresden Files to a 1.4 coverage/universe rating and 1.7 million viewers.

Currently, Eureka is averaging a 1.7 coverage/universe rating for its second season. And Ghost Hunters averaged 1.4 for its latest batch of episodes while Destination Truth averaged a 1.1 rating. In other words, Flash Gordon started off strong but looks to be going down fast. In all fairness, the second episode was up against High School Musical 2, which was seen by 17.2 million viewers, and no numbers for the third episode are available yet.

My guess is that once the series has aired (20 to 22 eps?) it will get canned, unless the ratings improve...which I doubt will happen.
