Either he's dead or my watch has stopped!

« on: August 19, 2007, 09:58:36 PM »

I recently bought the DVD and watched BARRY LYNDON (1975) directed by Stanley Kubrick, a film I’ve enjoyed since the first time I sat thru it.  This was perhaps my third time viewing it all the way thru, but certainly not my last.  I suddenly feel the whole film revealed itself to me while I was watching it this umpteenth time!  Not well received by USA audiences, it’s stature has grown, particularly since Kubrick’s death, but I find it amusing that when NY Times critic Pauline Kael reviewed the film as new, she bemoaned it didn’t have more of TOM JONES (1963) in it…!!!

Hardly a bawdy romp, but with plenty of bawdy and romp within it, I would rank BARRY LYNDON as one of those endlessly watchable films.  This is partly because of its long length (over 3 hours) partly because of it’s stunning cinematography, composition, and sheer beauty, and primarily because there is always something new revealed.  This deep, unexpected movie has something for everyone including titilation, brutal violence, low-life and high court intrigue, betrayal, jealousy, and a not-quite impartial eye on tragedy.  The film is not so much about its story as about how the world of men works and how men manipulate and sometimes destroy one another.

Unbelievably the gorgeous soundtrack to this masterpiece is out of print, though the music director, Leonard Rosenman, won the academy award for 1975!  This is a long movie, but if you don’t mind long ones, especially sitting in the comfort of your own home, you might be surprised by BARRY LYNDON

This is one of my Fav's ... I've got a huge period piece collection of films I'd say it's likely my one of my top choices of genres. I forget how many times I've seen it and never grow tired of it.

There are a lot of movie a long this line that are really good.

Possible the only war movie / soldier  i could ever relate too.  Kubrick is the man.  This and "Paths of glory" are total genius.

While I'm a huge Kubrick fan, Barry Lyndon is actually my least favorite movie of his.

However, it is a gorgeous movie to look at as they used high speed lenses so that they were able to light the entire movie with completely natural lighting.

There's just something that has never clicked with me about this movie.

Not entirely true; with indoor daytime scenes, lights were used outside the windows to give the illusion of daylight...also the final duel is shot with many lights projected in thru the apertures and lost windows of the ruined church (except one part where bluish daylight can be seen thru two niches...)

Well, my friend, you might consider spending more time with BARRY LYNDON.  It's true that it is not a crowd-pleaser, not an easy film, and certainly can fall flat because of the seeming distance, long running time, and melancholy tone.  Richard Schickel wrote in 1975 when the film was new: "Kubrick demonstrates singularity of vision, mature mastery of his medium, near-reckless courage in asserting through this work a claim to greatness that time alone can—and probably will—confirm."  I couldn't agree more!   Smile

I remember renting this a number of years ago and being bored to tears.  So bored I didn't even finish it (I rented it on VHS, before the DVD came out, and only watched the first tape).

I've been meaning to give it another shot though.

He was a flawed hero.  he fought in the army to eat, not because he gave a s**t.  he did what hewanted and paid the price when he had to.  and had adventures.  it's like ...life maan

I love this movie!

First time I watched it, I couldn't stop. Awesome and gripping climax.

It's one of my favorite Kubrick flicks. It's almost two movies, really.

Love the references to it in Eyes Wide Shut as well.

I got this on VHS, I'm planning on getting the Criterion DVD edition of this one of these days --- I think this is something of a hidden gem only because Kubrick made so many great films that this gets lost in this discussion

I was pleasantly surprised by this one...I'd always put off watching it because im not particularly a fan of this kind of period cinema. but y'know what? other than it being maybe a smidge over long it keeps a really good pace and is a genuinely thought provoking look at the human condition and how "Having it all" doesn't necessarily mean you "Have it all"...gorgeous cinematography as well :) anything that has Leonard Rossiter in it's gonna be good! :) I cant say its my favourite Kubrick film but it's got to be up there :)
