“Dr. Jonathan Chase is a wealthy, young, and handsome man with the brightest of futures with a very dark past. From Africa’s deepest recesses, to the rarest peaks of Tibet, heir to his father’s legacy, and the world’s darkest mysteries is Jonathan Chase, master of the secrets that divide man from animal, animal from man, Manimal.”
.

As awful as this 8 episode show was, I still have fond memories of watching it when I was 8 years old back in 1983.
I've always wondered why with practically every series it seems like is coming out on DVD, that someone hasn't packaged this into a DVD set of some sort.  It only ran for 8 episodes before getting unceramoniously canned.  I think that the creator of this show had another series  called Automan running at the same time that ran for about the same # of episodes.

What was funny about the show is that our intrepid hero was supposed to be able to transform into any animal yet the only ones that they actually showed him transforming into was a black panther or a hawk.  I think he transformed into some other stuff but I don't think they showed the transformation proabably due to budget constraints.

Anyone else remember this show and if so what are your memories of it?

Lagomorphs: menace or underutilized resource?

I do remember Manimal. I enjoyed the show reasonably well, or at least the idea for the show; it was something different. My brother and I did rag on it quite a bit since it was pretty silly, but I had fun watching it. It was much better than the following year's even-shorter-lived series The Master (Lee Van Cleef's ninja series that lasted all of 6 episodes).

I only know this show by the lamentations of it's cancellation by Tom Servo on MST3K.  I was a little too young to remember the show...unfortunately (?).

I remember watching it in grade school, I had a friend who wasnt allowed to watch because his mom thought it was satanic (or something) that a guy could turn into an animal. I grew up in the bible belt obviously.

There's an episode of Chris Elliott's Get a Life where Chris is hit by a car and his legs are mangled, the driver is a doctor and says "I can reset your legs but you will feel more pain than any human has expierenced" Chris replies "You weren't around when I heard they canceled Manimal." I always loved that line. Smile

I remember the cheese factor of it.  I remember Melody Anderson  TongueOut and I remember an episode where he turned into a bull and rampaged through a ninja training school

Thats about it.

I saw it when I was in elementary school, it was aired on a then government station around 1988 Imevision (Mexico). Now  I can see why  they frequently repeated the same old episodes, only 8 !  They aired the episodes late night, like midnight, because it displayed some "adult situations'  Situations like when Manimal transformed into a black cat (little panther hahaha) and then started to make his way into a woman's blouse, it was hot...Just FYI, that station was common for air after midnight  some brazilian erotic soap operas with nudes and stuff..Ironic.

I remember liking the idea, it was pretty close to a comic book idea to my young mind, and I wanted to see series with fantasy or sci-fi themes at that time. Yet I found the actual show pretty dull. I saw clips years later, probably on one of those VH-1 I Love the 80s type shows, and was surprised how cheap looking even for 80s TV it was.

Having him turn into the same three animals most of the time allowed them to reuse the transformation footage. If they did it nowadays, there would probably be a serial plot arc about him trying to learn how to change into an ever greater variety of animals, and maybe not losing his human identity to some of the more savage or primitive animals.

I had a love-hate relationship with the show Automan. I thought it was a lame hero/action show. But hoped if it did well, other better superhero shows would get made.
