I suppose it could be worse, like I could be going to a higher end college.  I'm only taking one class this semester and I dropped about $600 tuition and books.  Even if that's still dirt cheap compared to some places, it still hit the pocket book pretty hard.   Hatred

Oh well, hopefully I'll have some good financial aid when I go to UW next year.
 Cheers

I think it was my last 4 or 5 semesters in college I simply stopped buying books.  Believe it or not, it turns out I didn't need them anyhow.   Thumbup

Yes indeed!  I've had many instructors when I was going for my BA make us buy the overly large, cumbersome, and insanely priced books, especially when we only read about 1/10 of the book.  The worst was a book for an Art Humanities class that weighed more than 20 lb.   The prof was always wondering why no one ever brought the book to class.

I was lucky on the book front for University.  They made up 'readers' which had photocopies of appropriate articles etc for each week.  Usually this was enough reading for us, and therefore only needed one per subject [and they usually floated at around the AU$30 mark each which is pretty good really]

Of course I did Arts, so that hardly counts [we barely woke up before 11]  I know people in Med or Law who fork out many many hundreds just on the books.

Ah the student life...

Yeah, they do try to squeeze every penny out of you. Thank God for financial aid. On the other hand, I can only imagine how long its gonna take me to pay it off.

I've taken the cheaper route out.  I'm now going to college, six years out of high school, albeit a community college.  It's strange being in college at 24.  There are few people there my same age.  Either they are much younger or 50 or older.

Anyway, I get a Pell Grant for my tuition.  It normally equals out to be much more money than what my tuition and books costs each semester.  I get about a thousand dollars cash back each semester left over from the grant.  They write out a check mid semester and the cash is yours to do what you want with.  Mine will be going to paying off the new bedroom suit my wife has been begging for.

Anyway, my books are about 80-100 dollars each.  I normally check amazon marketplace where the books are much cheaper.  A good example would be a CSS book I recently purchased for about 7.00 w/ shipping from the marketplace while the book itself would have been 78.00 from the bookstore.  If I buy the books out of pocket, it's just more cash for me during the semester.

I can't begin to imagine the amount it would cost to go to a "real" college.  I'd much rather pay the lower price and have smaller classes.

Hell, my tuition and books cost only 800 this semester and I'm taking full time classes.  Can't beat that.

I've often said that everyone in the US should boycott all universities for 2 years.

That will bring the cost of tuition and books down.

Reasonably, I could boycott the stuff because I already have a BA.  The thing that really sucks is going to be next year (or maybe the year after if I don't get into the program) when I officially go for my masters.

I tried taking ITE 100 back in the winter of 2005.
I already knew most of the computer stuff, but I flunked because all that schooly & learnin's stuff went right over my head.
$500 down the tubes.
I usually just read the instructions, but nobody want to give you credit for that sort of thing.

I dunno, maybe I'll figure out some other way to become a confirmed bachelor.

A friend of mine just got back from the States, Boston I think, where she had been studying on exchange for the better part of a year.  She said in one twisted way she felt guilty, because of the fact that she was on exchange and paying Australian rates to go to a classy university there [don't ask me which one, I don't know].  This ended up being significantly cheaper than any rate the actual students were paying.

The flipside also sucks: if they came here, they'd pay US fees for something much much cheaper.  Or at least I THINK that's how it works.
