A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: September 08, 2007, 10:14:26 AM »

I was too busy this week to do much posting, but Tuesday marked the one year anniversarly of Steve Irwin's death.  That news was like a punch in the gut to me . . . I felt as if I had lost a family member.  That someone who oozed life from every pore could be taken from us so suddenly, so senselessly, was a hard lesson for my kids to learn, because they looked on him as a family member.

RIP Steve, I hope you're in a place where the animals are abundant and friendly.

Steve's death was one the surprised me even tho I wasn't really all that surprised.
Maybe I'm wrong, but anyone who messes around with wild critters, is eventually gonna get their comeuppance.
I can't think about him tho, without his two word motto coming to mind.  "Crock poo!"
At the same time, a friend of mine came to visit from Australia, and we got to talking about Steve.  Her words were something along the lines of "We never see him on T.V. unless it's on one of those 'Look at this idiot.' shows.
I had to agree with her and really don't know why.

Steve was an incredible showman, but the fact remains he understood reptiles as well as anyone alive . . .most of his stunts were not nearly as dangerous as they looked.  His death was a million in one fluke, and I miss him sorely to this day.

I used to watch Steve when he first hit the air.  He made nature shows interesting to say the least.  Up until then the world was used to shows like Nova and Wild Kingdom.  However I always knew he'd die by the "sword".  In this case the "sword" being something out of nature.  I wouldn't have never guessed it would have been a sting ray.  Anyhow, RIP and I guess Crocs still Rule.

Izzy, you're right.  We barely saw him on TV here; only the occasional 'special'.  But his daughter is everywhere now...

As for the man, he sometimes annoyed the crap out of me, but for anyone trying to advance the cause of understanding and conservation, especially one as passionate as him, well, I highly respect that.  I made fun of his goofy accent and such sure, but I can't honestly say a bad word about him which is more than you can say about most...

Never could stand the guy myself but it's a shame that happened to him. But I guess you tick off animals for long enough and one was going to get the best of him eventually sad to say.
