I freely admit I'm not anime's biggest fan, but there's one or two I like. And this one in particular really grabbed me and pulled me into the story. I vaguely remember the plot. Basically this one small group of people wake up one morning to discover everyone else in the city has vanished; all communication with the outside world has been cut off. Venturing to the city limits reveals that, in one huge f**king head trip, the city is in fact on a pedestal held aloft by statues of people, floating through space. And when one of their number goes missing, they later discover a new statue in his likeness among the others.

Anyone know what this is, or did I dream it up???

That would most definitely be the second Uresei Yatsura movie, "Beautiful Dreamer".  It used to get played on Sci-fi Channel when they used to do the anime on Saturday morning. 

I'm actually a huge fan of the series...  I reccomend it if you can find the DVDs anywhere.
