This isn't exactly the documentary you may have heard about.  The line on this is it shows Seinfeld bombing, making his way like a new comic in the late night comedy club circuit when in actuality  it isn't as harrowing as all that.  He struggles a bit but does so in a good natured way, usually with the crowd on his side, but it is a unique and interesting subject, his late career attempt at a reinvention or at least chucking his old material.  At one point, Chris Rock informs him of a recent Bill Cosby performance he saw where the old man seemingly had an entirely new 2 and a half hour act.  Seinfeld,  who had similar if not greater success in the sit com world, must realize that indeed, there is always someone a little bit better even at such high levels of apparent laugh mastery.  Wisely, he endevours to meet and talk with cosby who dispenses advice in a light hearted but meaningful way.

The other character in this movie is up and coming comic Orny Adams.  He is on the same journey as Jerry but much much farther down the hill.  His act appears solid but somewhat mediocre.  Like he uses the stool on stage as a prop and people laugh and then applaud.  Because he's using a stool in a joke.  offstage, he has the excessive self confidence many of the American Idol generation do.  He has decided he is going to be succesful and if you don't think he's funny you are simply wrong.  He seems more like a gangster than a comedian most times .  He has moments of humility but they are far outweighed by his arrogence.  Clearly, this young man has a long long road ahead of him if he wants to get anywhere near his friend Jerry's type of success.

Some of the ruminating about stand up comedy is a little boring and those expecting a comedy of some sort will be sorely disspointed.  All in all though, a unique film that, if you think about it,  easily could have been a total humiliation and seinfeld deserves alot of credit for taking such a risk.

I heard about Seinfeld's "Comedian", but haven't seen it yet.

Is this the one with a cameo by Jim Norton?

I'll probably check it out because I always wanted to be a comedian.  Smile

I remember liking the film quite a bit when I saw it around the time of it's DVD release.  I also really disliking Orny Adams in the film.  If I recall correctly, he uses the stool as a cellphone prop, correct?

I'm a big Seinfeld fan so this one was a no-brainer for me.  I wish it would have been more of Jerry and less of Orny, but oh well.  It's not anything that I will rent again though.

orny is repellent but real.  I don't think you have to like him to like watching him.  It's amazing how arrogant he is sometimes.

It needs to be said:

Seinfeld was the least funny aspect of the show.

If I had tickets to see him live, I would give them away as I would feel guilty selling them.
