Timesonline (U.K.) has its list of the top 40 aliens:

http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/specials/space/article2575490.ece

Now, most of these are from sci-fi/fantasy movies/books.  But number one:

1:The Lord God

Perhaps not the most obvious contender for a list of aliens but certainly not terrestrial in origin, possessed of some extraordinary abilities, and pervading popular culture like no other personality the God of the Christians, Jews, and Muslims is – irrespective of how you might feel about his existence – the most powerful alien intelligence imaginable.

God did appear as an alien, in at least one Larry Cohen film.  Still, a pretty lame attempt at a joke.  And where's Ro-Man?

Seems like their list is in more-or-less random order  TeddyR

The Maggot from Galaxy of Terror certainly deserves it's place in cinematic history.

boo!  Super Giant/Starman is much cooler.  too many of these are just US aliens.  the Andromeda strain as an alien?  come on.  Venom is lame as lame can be.  they seem to think the Xenomorph wasn't from IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, and that was way cooler than the ALIENS, any day.

this list is far too full of Star Trek and Dr. Who aliens.

Ghidrah isn't from Planet X, they just controlled it, by the way.

The idea of lumping all Martians into one catagory is a lazy cop out. Martians in films constitute a wide variety of critters. Some of my favorites...
. The big head-bigeyed booze injecting Martians from INVASION of the SAUCERMEN !
. George Pal's cool suction cupped tri-eyed creeps from WAR of the WORLDS
. The zombie like mitten wearing slaves and their big head tentacle master from the original INVADERS from MARS.
. The leather clad b***h from DEVIL GIRL from MARS!!!
. The evil big brained midgets from MARS ATTACKS! ( bubble gum cards and movie!)
. The bizzare menagerie of creatures in the bizzare ANGRY RED PLANET.
 .....plus...being a BAD MOVIES freak...(non -martians)
 . as said...RO-MAN
 . The ALIEN'S DEADLY SPAWN
.the cross eyed monster fom FRANKENSTEIN meets the SPACE MONSTER!!!!
. the horny aliens from WHAM  BAM ! THANK YOU SPACE MAN!
. The Rock people from MISSLE to the MOON!!!!!
.The VAMPIRE cavemen...the crab people , the bat people and other assorted weird life in HORROR of the BLOOD MONSTERS!!!!
. the BRAIN from PLANET AROS!!!!! Yikes!
I'll stop now before I go insane!!!
...and as for forgein aliens...(just for you Xeno...)
.GOKE! the BODY SNATCHER from HELL!!!
. a favorite...YOG! MONSTER from OUTER SPACE (aka SPACE AMEOBA)

I guess who ever compiled the list, never saw "Robot Monster" w/ its space helmet wearing gorilla from outer space. That is at least a ten, when it comes to Original Features and Overall Coolness.
