I wonder why no one had thought of this method before. Interesting!

When I first read the title to this thread I thought it said "Canada cuts power lines to battle Bot." I had this image in my head of some giant robotic construct, designed for combat purposes and now threatening to break free and go on a rampage unless the cables feeding it power were severed. Cutting power to pot growers makes more sense.  TeddyR

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

Will the cops just start looking into folks who put up solar panels or other alternative power sources and get off the power grid?

I thought they already did things like this to track down the hydroponic growers. Like all those news stories a few years ago about the cops using infrared heat detectors to sfind the pot growers because of all  the heat given off by growing the stuff indoors.

They've been doing it for years. That's why the serious home growers (that is to say people who buy homes just to grow pot) break through the foundation and tie directly into the mains, bypassing the meter. Some of these wiring jobs are scary, to say the least.

I've covered a few pot house busts, and when you talk to the neighbours, they aren't really that hard to find. Blinds always down, owner who is rarely seen, etc. They pack as much space with growing equipment as they can, running ducts up through closets to take the excess heat out the roof vents.

Actually, in one of the stories I covered, the local volunteer fire chief decided to check out the rumours with the department's new thermal camera. The house lit up like a Christmas tree, with a particular warm glow around the basement and plumes of heat leaving the roof vents. I was there with a camera while the cops in white hazmat gear hauled the weed out to a truck in wheeled plastic garbage containers.

Actually, just last year I got to photograph $300,000 in confiscated marijuana plants piled in the back of a police station. Man, does that stuff stink when there's a lot of it.

They dressed up in mazmat suits to touch pot plants?  That's just too funny.  Wonder what they wear to go to the liquor store.

Amusingly enough, there was a bust just outside of my little hometown that did just this. Just outside of my town, there is an old military installation chock full of old bunkers, that has be converted to a wildlife reserve. Someone got the brilliant idea to crack the cement plug on one of those, move a couple of generators, and start up a grow op underground. The only reason it was found is due to a hunter out there demanding to know why the military was moving back in. Cops were all WTF are you talking about, went and checked it out, and seized a couple hundred pounds of pot. They never caught the people who set that up.

They do it for cleaning out any significant drug operation. Never know what you might find. Depending on what people are cooking up, there can be some nasty stuff around. Even if somebody's just growing pot, there's a lot of heat and moisture in there. The house could be full of mould.

A former grow-op is one of the things you need to watch for when buying a house, because of the damage it can do. A couple of years after that one bust I mentioned, a guy called me up for a copy of the story. He was looking to buy the house, and the realtor was playing dumb about the history. So I sent him the page, complete with a picture of the front door, house number and a guy in hazmat gear wheeling out a big bin with plants hanging out from under the lid. He did apparently buy the house, but I imagine he paid less for it.

You gotta admit it's pretty funny though.  I mean, boathouses, greenhouses, old buildings with holes in the roof...the need for hazmat suits is neverending  TeddyR

I knew about the hazmat suits, especially for suspected meth operations. Locally a few years ago, there was a wave of raids for portable meth labs in cars and later labs being set up in rented cabins in state parks and isolated cabins.

A guy at work was living in a RV camp a few years after a divorce, he kept going on about this one woman who he was attracted to who lived on a campsite away from the others where you could barely see her camper, didn't talk to anyone else, and who never left to go to work or get supplies. Pretty worldly guy, but several of us were cautioning him that she could be part of a meth operation under those circumstances, since they had found labs under similar conditions at the time.

Back to pot, when the local sheriff's office would destroy the crops they had seized the used to use the incinerator of a certain grocery store. From all reports, people used to gather downwind to try and catch a contact high of all that ganja burning up.

The problem with an incinerator is that the combustion is too complete. All the lovely chemicals are destroyed.

 BounceGiggle BounceGiggle

I came home from work one day about two years ago and found a very strange looking plant growing in one of my plant pots. My mom has the green fingers in the family so I called her and described what the plant looked like. My mom said that I had a marijuana plant growing there ~ she had grown up in the 30's and 40's on a farm and those plants grew wild.

The weird thing is my landlord had entertained some people from the police a few days earlier, so they must have seen the thing.  Buggedout

Guess, someone should have told them, then.

Trevor, I had a neighbor in my old apartment, who grew a pot plant in a cup that he kept in his kitchen window that people walked by all day long. He said he would take it out and plant it elsewhere once it began to be recognizeable for what it really was. Don't know if he ever did or not.

When I was a kid, we found a pot plant growing in the woods behind the local YMCA where I went as part of an afterschool program. They used to let us kids play war back there sometimes. I doubt it was growing wild from its location, plus there was a large apartment complex not far away. It would have been a great place for someone there to plant the stuff, close enough for easy access, but as long as you weren't caught with it hard to trace it back to the owner.

Yeah, unless it's growing on private property, the cops have a hard time charging anyone. Every year, it turns up in parks, cornfields, woodlots, etc. They're satisfied with keeping it off the streets.

I did have an opportunity a few years ago to photograph one such crop. I happened to be in the police station, getting the weekly summary from the sergeant, when a guy came in and reported finding a bunch of plants just off one of the local hiking trails. He had followed a deer path into the woods and found a whole bunch of plants growing in a clearing.

I got my report, left without saying a word, then tracked the guy down and got him to show me.

Where I was, they pretty much relied on reports from farmers to find the little crops. Where I am now, there's mile after mile of wilderness once you get away from the highways, and a lot of it isn't owned by anyone. A bit more challenging, but the cops have access to a helicopter. GPS information directs officers on the ground. Still, there's undoubtedly a lot of pot growing up here that nobody knows about.

There's unowned land in Canada? I know there are huge tracts of land here that are neglected, isolated, or unused (making it easier to grow pot on it), and the government (federal, state, local) owns ridiculous amounts of land in the western US, but land that isn't owned by anyone? Land that even ot even the native peoples (do Canadians still use the term First Peoples?) have claim to?

Helicopters are part of the annual searches and roundups they do here, used to be big on the local TV news, lots of pictures.
