A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: October 13, 2007, 12:06:09 AM »

I was a huge fan of 1998's ELIZABETH, so tonight my wife and I went to see THE GOLDEN AGE with high hopes.  This movie was not as good as the first, but was still head and shoulders above many historical dramas I have seen.

STRENGTHS:
Cate Blanchett.  She IS Elizabeth now - everytime I lecture on that remarkable period of history, I see her face.  She turns a solid performance as a queen who is powerful, vulnerable, courageous, and terrified all at the same time.
Geoffrey Rush - Returning as Francis Walsingham, he is once more solid as the ultimate spymaster and perfect courtier.
Cinematography - this is a visually stunning film, with some CGI but not over-the-top, and incredible sets.
Clive Owen - as the dashing rake Walter Raleigh, he wins the heart of the queen and her ladies in waiting.

WEAKNESSES:
Pace - the film drags a bit in the middle,  many of the scenes are stretched out for dramatic effect when they really didn't need to be.
Dialogue - Elizabeth's actual speech before her army on the eve of the great battle with the Armada was far more moving and compelling than the one the movie put in her mouth.  Why change it?
Accuracy - OK, here is the historian in me coming out.  This movie totally shafted the most daring, intriguing, and courageous character in the war with Spain - Sir Francis Drake!  His raid on the New World Colonies of Spain isn't even mentioned, nor his daring pre-emptive strike against the Armada in Cadiz while it was still under construction, nor his masterful playing of the superstitious Spaniard's belief that he had sold his soul to the Devil and could never die in battle (He lashed skeletons to the helms of the fire ships before sending them against the anchored Spanish fleet!).  Instead, he emerges in the last 15 minutes of the movie as a rather stodgy naval officer.

But still, all in all, this movie was well worth the $6 per ticket.  I give it four out of five stars and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  I am still waiting for a really good movie about Henry VIII . . . .

I was going to see this one Friday night, but after reading the 25% tomato meter over at rottentomatoes.com. Maybe I'll check it out.
