Has anyone ever done this?  The topic came up at work, and I was the only one who had ever heard of it.  But I have never done it.  Here is some information:

So has anyone done this or even heard of it?

Huh. I never knew this was a sport for people. As kids, my frends and I used to catch worms to sell to the local baitshop. We discovered that worms like beer. If you spray an area with watered down old skunky beer and come back later that night, usally it will be crawling with worms! Happy, happy worms I bet too. Considering we would usally only get about 2$ per pound for the worms I have to wonder if it was worth stealing our parents beer. I will have to tell my daughter about the electricity method so she can try that. Thumbup

We used to 'fiddle' for worms.

You need a handsaw.

You cut down a small cedar tree and then saw straight down into the stump. The vibrations bring the worms up.

Serves four.

I've heard of the fiddle method  for worms.  I always found nightcrawler hunting fun on hot summer nights.  Almost better than fishing.

Yes, worm calling works. It mimics the vibrations of a mole's digging.  The worms rush to the surface and will attempt to move quickly away from the source of the vibrations.  The easiest way to do this is with a hickory sliver about ten inches long, and a notched or ribbed board you drag across the top of the hickory sliver.  This makes a ttttrrrrriiiiipppppp,  ttttrrrrrriiiiipppppp noise as the hickory sliver vibrates the ground, keep it up for about 3-5 min and the ground will explode with night-crawlers.

A pioneer delicacy is blanched earth worms.  You drop them into boiling hot water for about 15 seconds, and then lightly salt. If you have eggs you can scramble the eggs and throw them right on in.   Its a good survival trick as the worms are easy to collect with this method.  Despite the thought of consuming the worms, they are both filling and nutritious  and if you would believe tasty too.
