need help for finding names of two movies

theirs is two movies for the life of me i cant remember the first is a sci fi movie from 70's to early 80's from what i remember has this guy who crash lands on a planet and he has some sort of robot dog that looks like a japanese toy he then falls into a lake and goes crazy and bulky i only remember bits like these group of aliens in a flying hovercraft thing some kids and a bad guy looking for the kids and the big bulky saves them at the end then jumps back into the lake and becomes normal again and the kids ask about the robot and he says thats my dog the second movie is a 70's movie about these kids going across america to get a flag and get their freedom but if they fail they die a bit of a weird request but if ive been trying for years any help would be great

I saw a movie a few years back that sounds ALOT like your first one. I can't remember the name of it, but the man who crashes into the lake and comes out crazy was actor Richard Kiel. He's the guy that played JAWS in a couple of bond flicks.  Hope this helps some.
