This week The Shining and A Clockwork Orange come out on HD DVD!  Full Metal Jacket is already out.  Orange and The Shining have all new features and commentaries.

I watched The Shining yesterday and it was like watching the movie for the first time.  The Overlook Hotel looks even more creepy but elegant.  Shelly Duval is even more homely.  I can't wait to see A Clockwork Orange as it is one of my all-time favorites.

If you don't have an HD DVD player, get one (and an HD TV, too) and get these movies!  Has anyone else picked these up yet?

I picked up the standarad DVD box set on Tuesday which from what I've gathered was quite a feat as tons of people have been unable to find it.

I'm not buying into high definition DVD until once format comes out the clear winner which seems like it's going to take a while.

But I'm thoroughly pleased with the Kubrick box set.  The extras are great but I'm wondering where the Sydney Pollack commentary from Eyes Wide Shut went.  Also, the  R rated version of Eyes Wide Shut isn't on there as well which would have been great to compare for censorship purposes.

I'm hoping that when Eyes Wide Shut hits HD DVD they'll have an "unrated" version without the super-fake CGI "actors" in the way of the action  Wink

I've staked my claim in HD DVD!  Gods be damned!

I also own the Kubrick box set...but it's a shame they didn't put Paths of Glory and The Killing in there.  Sure, they're his "lesser" works but they still need to be grouped with the rest....Hell, I'd throw Spartacus in there too.

I can't wait to see Barry Lyndon and 2001 in HD!  I hope they come out soon...

I'll probably go with HD-DVD as my hi-def format of choice at some point.  Hell, the add on for my 360 is only about $150 and comes with five free HD-DVDs.  I just don't see paying the money now and having to go back and recreate my whole DVD collection on another format.  For now, I'll stick to my regular DVDs.

I think that HD might  end up winning over Blu-Ray as it's (from what I've read) much easier to program for and HD always has picture in picture commentary options that I haven't seen on Blu-Ray yet.

But I'm on a tight budget at the moment and it's just not economically feasible for me to even think about replacing ANY of my pretty large DVD collection  (over 750).

Eyes Wide Shut and 2001: A Space Odyssey came out on the same day (this past Tuesday).  Eyes Wide Shut is the un-edited version.  So far I don't know of any plans to release Barry Lyndon in high-def.

I must mention that the blu-ray disc of A Clockwork Orange is all on one disc while the HD-DVD is on two, so obviously blu-ray has a higher capacity.  I really don't care which format wins, although blu-ray has prettier looking cases.

Oh, if anyone wants in-depth reviews/comparisons of all the new Kubrick DVDs I'd go to DVD Beaver:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/

They haven't covered the Full Metal Jacket disc, yet.
