Japanese film, extremely violent

I think you folks will answer this one in very quick order.  I just don't know the title.

A film buff once told me about a japanese film about young criminals being kept on a island where they basically tear each other to pieces.  Sort of like a japanese version of Escape From New York.  I don't know how close I am to the premise of the film, I just remember the guy saying it was incredibly violent and had slow-motion scenes of pretty graphic carnage.

Awesome movie! Then they had to go and make that sequel.........
