There was this movie I watched when I was a kid (why my parents let me watch it I don't know) where this guy tried to break into a factory (I think) and there was some wet paint on the wall near a door.  Somebody opened the door and the guy backed up into the paint with his hands resting on the wet paint.  The mark left by his hand left and outline of someone flipping the bird.

Somehow, this became a cultural phenomenon (in the movie's world) and everybody started flipping each other off.  A news crew was doing a report and interviewed a nun and she flipped off the camera guy.

I think this was a comedy in the 80's or late 70's.  Is this ringing any bells?  Thanks for the help in advance...

I can't remember the name of the movie, but I think I know which one you are referring to. A man and his friends break into the factory because they are angered due to the freezing death of an elderly woman who couldn't pay her heat bill.

After the print is discovered, he becomes an anonymous icon known as 'The Finger'.

I've been trying to google it to find the name, but have had no success so far.

Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only person who remembers this movie.  I was beginning to think that it was a figment of my sometimes twisted imagination.  I tried looking up all variations of "flipping the bird" on imdb and google to no avail.

I remember this movie too. Unfortunately I can't think of the title, but you are not alone.

Quote
Before the battle of Agincourt in 1445, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore the soldier would be incapable of fighting in the future.

This famous weapon was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as “plucking the yew” (or “pluck yew”).

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, “See, we can still pluck yew! Pluck yew!”

Since “pluck yew” is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodental, fricative ‘F’ and thus the words often used in conjuction with the one-finger salute are mistakenly thought to have something to do with an intimate encounter.

It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as “giving the bird”.

And yew thought yew knew your history.

I found that while searching! AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE!
