Never give up on love

« on: December 05, 2007, 09:24:08 PM »

I watched this last night not really knowing what to expect.  I was lead to believe it was a horror/slasher/sick nudie kind of job, but it turned out to be nothing of the sort.  It's actually a thinking man's horror, although I would class it more as terror.

Tom Cavanagh plays your average schmo who goes into hospital for a routine operation and that's where badness starts.  Through the whole film I kept wondering is he dead? Dreaming? Crazy? Is this stuff really happening?

It was awesome.  At the end I said to my son, "this one is a purchase!"

Anyone else see this excellent DVD treat? What did you guys think?

Talk about judging a book by its cover.  I bought this movie and watched it once and then threw it away.  The box labeled it as a psychological horror movie with thrills and chills (I'm paraphrasing of course).

There are pointless scenes of Tom being wheeled around in a wheelchair.  And a whole lot of nothing then a bunch of heavy-handed message delivery and then it was over.  There's a reason this movie went straight to video.  Plus, it was released or shot too close to the Terri Shivo (sp?) debacle.  I fact, that's probably why it was green-lit in the first place.

Sorry to disagree with you Bees but I hated this movie.   Thumbdown

I think that the makers of this movie thought that it was more clever than what it actually turned out to be.

The box makes it look like to be one thing but it turned out to be something completely different IMO, but not in a good way.

I admire the filmmakers for trying to do something different.  That said, they make a lot of rookie mistakes that keep SUBLIME from being a truly good film.  The scenario is promising: you're sent to a hospital for a routine procedure, they perform the wrong surgery on you, you're constantly drugged and you have difficulty distinguishing the actual tragedy from your paranoid fantasies.  But it seems they did two things wrong fro every one thing they did right.  Example: there are three motifs that run through the main character's hallucinations: uncertainty about his wife's loyalty, "white liberal guilt", and some sort of "psychic surgery" imagery.  The first theme is incorporated really well, but the second is forced (although "Mandingo" does his best), and the third never really amounts to much of anything.  Another example: the beginning is too slow, the middle creates a nice sense of mystery and dread that was actually drawing me in, then the ending comes as a complete anticlimax.  Still it wasn't horrible and it's worth a look for fans of psychological horror.  2.5 out of 5.

I'm with Killer Bees on this one.  I really liked it; I had seen the previews and found the movie fascinating.  Yeah, the message was heavy-handed, but it was also very poignant and many of the scenes were really mess-with-your-head bizarre.

I loved Sublime.  I, too, went in expecting something totally different, and was pleasantly surprised.  Looking at the cover, I expected it to be another slasher flick, but it was, as you said, a "thinker".
