I guess it depends on what kind of soda we are talking about, if I had to choose a favorite.

If it's cola, then I'll usually choose Coke over Pepsi.  My wife is a huge Pepsi fan but I've never really cared much for it.  Coke just has a much better taste to me.  Not only that, but I have fond memories of drinking bottled Coke growing up.  On occasion during the summer, you can still find actual glass bottles of it here.  Just doesn't taste the same in plastic.

As for the fruity/energy drinks, I'd have to say Surge which Ash mentioned.  That stuff was some of the best tasting soda ever created.  Now that it's discontinued, I'd have to say that Vault is my new drink of choice.  It sort of a mix between Surge and Mello-Yellow.  Pretty good stuff, but still not a substitute for Surge.

Also wanted to comment on Sun Drop.  I always loved those growing up as well.  Haven't had one in ages.  Coming up, I remember that they used to have the pulp still floating inside the liquid.  Is that still the case?  I might have to search around here and see if anyone carries it here.

IN new Orleans they sued to have this stuff called Cajun Cola that was amazing.  it was coke that had like cinammon in it or something.

Also,  in order to get REAL Coca cola, no i don't mean with cocaine,  you have to go at least south of the border where they make it with SUGAR instead of frickkin CORN SYRUP!!

As a kid I drank whatever my parents bought, but preferred Coke to Pepsi, we bought what was on sale. My grandparents only shopped at Winn-Dixie stores and for years only bought the Chek store brand drinks. I'm told Diet Dr. Chek is good for pouring on fire ant mounds.

I took the Pepsi Challenge at the state fair one year, I picked Coke. The pretty girl in the booth was nice but seemed disappointed in me, guess they trained them to be that way. I don't think my life has been the same since.

When I first discovered it on a family trip, I fell in love in with Barq's root beer. Couldn't get enough of the stuff, when we would come back from trips to Florida, my parents would stop outside of Birmingham (the closest place we could find it) and buy a case to shut me up. We'd buy it at gas stations usually, but we started to buy it at this shady liquor/smokes/porn/junk food/who knows what else store clinging to the side of I-65. I wasn't supposed to be allowed in the store, they had it posted you were supposed to be 19 0r 21 to even enter. "Make it last," they'd tell me, I rarely had a can of the stuff left a week later.

In my teens and college days I was an RC fan, pure heaven. One summer they had a promo with prizes under the cap. I almost made it through the whole summer never having to buy more than 5 of them I got so many free ones. A few years later, they became too sweet for me, just like Dad said they did for him. The last one I bought was a high end RC product that didn't fly (RC Draft?), came in a bottle like a beer bottle, the guy at the counter tried to card me for it.

I went though a Red Rock Cola phase, because it was cheap, and the grocery stores all had it. Don't know how local it is. Red Rock tasted like a rawer more effervescent Coke. I guess it's still around.

I switched back to Coke for years and years, but now I rarely touch the stuff, having cut back on sugar and caffeine. I have about one soft drink a month, at parties if nothing else is there, to settle my stomach if a little sick (rather have ginger ale though), or for quick empty calories when I forget my lunch at work.

Not as much stuff floating in it as there use to be, it's the WOOD ROSIN ... yes SunDrop is made from WOOD. Ok I don't know if it's made from wood but it has glycerol ester of wood rosin in it, what ever the hell that is. I guess if you need to rosin up your bow.

Believe it or not SunDrop and Whiskey is a popular mix here, at first I thought it was just wrong and sounded nasty but it's actually pretty tasty.

AS for regular Cola's, RC and COKE is the brands of choice here. Not many Pepsi drinkers unless it's Pepsi Twist which comes and goes around here, never know if you can find it or not. But Coke Lime seems to be pushing it out.

Coca Cola for me, no Pepsi. (yeccch)  Don't know why, I just can't stand the taste of Pepsi.

When I was living in South Carolina I got introduced to Blenheim's Ginger ale.  It's a real ginger ale, with a very tart flavor, not sickly sweet.

I don't know where the stuff comes from, but around here you can buy this glass-bottle stuff from a company called Jones Cola and they make a variety of flavored sodas with ridiculous names like Foo Foo Berry.  In spite of the names, they're some of the most delicious bevs I've laid taste on.  They have a grape flavored one called MF Grape that is the best of the best.  They're an absolute treat and a little hard to come by.

My real affinity, though, is energy drinks.  Until I stopped working over the weekends, I was what you might consider an afficionado.  I'd had all the common stuff, the Red Bulls, the Amps, Monster, but I loved tracking down weird stuff that you didn't see too often.  Walmart was a great resource for this.  At Walmart I found:

The Stephen Segal energy drink which featured his face on the can and a can-length explanation of the ingredients and how they're spiritually beneficial.  I bought the blue one which had some eastern sounding name but tasted like Amp, Mountain Dew's energy drink.  Provided absolutely no buzz.

Old Glory, America's Best Energy Drink which tasted like really sweet, carbonated apple cider but featured wrap-around can-art of the flag, which a s**tty eagle drawn over the name and the pledge of allegiance on the side with UNDER GOD emphasized in all caps.  It tasted like crap but you're not likely to ever find another beverage with that kind of ridiculous presentation.  Minor buzziness.

The Hulk Hogan Energy Drink which was red and yellow and tasted like any other Monster energy drink.  Cartoony drawing of the Hulkster on the side, zero buzz.

At a pizza place a few doors down from where I worked, they ordered whatever exotic looking energy drinks were at their disposal:

Freak Maniac - No idea who they were targeting with this product, but the side asked what kind of freak you were and included the option of being a boob freak, so this drink became my defacto favorite for this reason alone.  Tasted like cider, not bad, crazy buzz.

NoS - Contained in an opaque, blue bottle with a cap that looked like a valve handle.  Tasted incredibly citrus-y and provided a crazy buzz.  We'd put away as many of these as we could in an hour and spend the rest of the night flipping out behind the counter.

Jolt - Remember this stuff?  Seemed hard to find for so long and still is to some degree.  They repackaged the cola plus other flavors in these pressure sealed vessels that pop loudly when you open them.  The cola is plain old Jolt Cola but now there's Jolt Red, which tastes, as I imagine it would, like Red, Jolt Blue which tastes like a sickeningly sweet blue drink, Jolt Orange, which is like any old orange soda, Jolt Silver which is like Sprite, Cherry Bomb which is like Dr. Pepper, and Purple which is their grape variant.  Of them all, Grape was the king and the buzz that these things delivered was unparalelled.  We got them for free from the pizza place and routinely pushed the envelope to see how far we could take it.  This stuff routinely left us completely out of control.

For me, if it's cherry and cola, I love it. When they still had it, Cherry Cola RC was my favorite as it tasted the closest to those restaurant cherry colas that used actual cherry syrup in the cola. Once that disappeared though it became Wild Cherry Pepsi.

If I didn't limit myself I could probably drink half a 12 pack in under an hour. O_o

They still sell Cherry RC here, RC is big here too. Coke is still king and RC is 2nd in the colas. You might just have to request a store carries it.

hard to find here - but Goose Island. 100% pure cane sugar
That means no HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP - genetically modified. It tastes like how soda used to taste back in the day

Try finding a soda with sugar and not high fructose corn syrup next time you go shopping. Just try

not easy is it? But it's worth it

Sioux-  half the stuff in my refrigerator has corn something or other in it.  frikkin corn subsidies.  Guliani and Romney were towing the line at the last GOP debate of how neccasary they are, even though corn prices are through the roof.  had nothing to do with wanting to win the states that get the subsidies I'm sure.

Aw, man.

I work doing night stock at a grocery store up here in Minnesota and I asked our RC pop vendor about it and he said they don't carry it anymore as far as he could tell, at least in our area. I guess where I live the distributors don't want to sell it or something cause they're stupid?
>_O It stinks cause I really liked Cherry RC cola. For a while we didn't have Cherry 7-Up around here, but they brought it back. Maybe they'll do that for the RC. Maybe.

Well I bought some today, and they are delish! If you want I can ship you some ... but you'll have to pony up cost and shipping. They're $1.10 each in the store for 20 oz. size.

well i don't think that high fructose corn syrup should be high on our list, and yet it's in EVERYTHING. Even stuff that woudn't even have sugar in it. i'm not quite a fan of so many additives that have to be put into food, particularly any that seem engineered in a lab

Rapscallion, I think Jones Cola comes from Canada. I've have several people recommend it to me even though they know I don't  drink sodas much any more. Wasn't sure which one to try.

BTW, anyone from an area where they still sell Moxie? Always wanted to try one.

Is Double Cola still around? That used to be huge here when I was little, or at least they had a much bigger ad budget back then. As a kid I thought they were owned by Pepsi since the logo design were similar, like Ford had Mercury and Lincoln, I thought Double Cola was a variant of the Pepsi formula. Strange I know.

Before there was Mellow Yello, does anyone remember a drink like Sun Drop or Mountain Dew called Kick? I can remember the cans and some cheesy 70s/early 80s TV ads.

You really should read my first post ... LOL

Kickapoo Joy Juice AKA Kick

Double Cola

I see KICK on occasion around here, but I haven't seen it in a while though come to think of it. I use to drink it, it was pretty tasty. Kick started as Kickapoo Joy Juice then it was Kick now it's back to Kickapoo Joy Juice again. I'll have to see if I can locate some around here.

I can get Double Cola a little south of here in TN about 8 miles away. I like Double Cola as a kid because every bottle tasted different like they kept changing the formula. It's made in Chattanooga.
