Well I've had Blockbuster since it started online and they've done nothing but get slower and slower and raise their rates every 3 or 4 months. 2 years ago I signed up for $9.99 a month, well it went to $12.99, then $14.99, then $17.99, then $24.99 not as of Dec 27, 2007 it's going up to $26.99.

Well when I first got them I could turn about 13-15+ movies a month, with two in store free rentals. They started Total access and you could turn every movie you got online into the store for a free rental, but their shipping started slowing down and I could turn 9-10 movies a month plus free in store rentals for every movie returned. So that was 18-20 a month, not to bad. Well in the last couple of months it been about 6 to 9 movies a months shipped  closer to 6 and only 4 so far this month and 2 were broken. Additionally the "Very Long Wait" list going very fast and only common movies and stuff worse than B's are available. (Which their "B" selection was rather lacking overall) I had 100 movies in queue and 64 were on a long wait or very long wait. I also saw an increase in the number of broken DVD's I received as of late. It was a good deal at first now it's just a waste of money.
The in store trade was a good deal because I drove right past the store every day, but by now I think I've seen everything in the store at least twice.

So is Netflix good, bad ugly? I'm in a rural area so I'm not sure how fast they can deliver here as opposed to metro areas, not sure were their nearest shipping center is at.

I love Netflix, and would never even think about switching back over to Blockbuster.  Granted I never tried Blockbuster's online service but their awful in store customer service and practice of editing their films always p**sed me off to no end.

Netflix is very good.  I've been using them for about two years now and it's a great service.  Shipping is quick.  At my old location, it would take two days to get a film.  Since the recent move, it only takes a day.  I now live only about an hour from a distribution center.

Their library of DVDs is impressive, and they generally have a large stock of films.  Say if a film actually is on Long Wait, then you can create a subaccount and put the film you want in there and it will get shipped every time.  I keep a subaccount open in my wife's name just for that reason.

I say to give Netflix a try.  Can't hurt.

I also love Netflix; I've been very happy with them.

We have the 3-at-a-time plan, which has recently gone DOWN in price per month!  We've been with Netflix for 2 years, do 6-14 movies per month and in that time have only had two damaged that had to be sent back.  They dealt with both no questions asked.

For a while when the 'throttling' discussion was going around the 'Net, also when we were doing 12+ per month consistently, I was wondering if we were being throttled.  Some of our returns seemed to take an extra day or so to 'register' compared to what I came to associate with 'normal' (ie, generally the day after I mail).

Lately, though, the service has been excellent.  They typically ship the day they receive, and usually receive the day after I ship.  I usually receive within one or two days of them shipping to me, so let's say a 2-3 turnaround from the day I ship.

There's never a shortage of stuff to watch; my queue stays 100-120, and I have made almost a hobby of moving things around according to the mood of the various family members.

As for Blockbuster, the in-store returns or freebies was never a draw to me, as part of what I LOVE about Netflix is I don't have to go to the flippin store!  If I had the Blockbuster deal, I probably would not be using the in-store freebies anyway.  I guess that's just me, though.

If you are paying $26 per month for the same service you used to pay under $20, I'd seriously give Netflix a look.

I am seriousally considering signing up for Netflix.  I love my B movies, but it's expensive to keep buying DVD's and plus I'm running out of sapce to put my dvd's.  This way I can rent a film, and if I like it, I can buy at a latter time.

I have had Netflix for almost two years on the 3 at a time plan (like Ulthar) and pay about $18-19 a month. The service is pretty good. Like Skaboi I live really close to a distribution center so I get my movies quick and their selection is damn good. I did have a problem with shipping awhile back not getting movies and them not getting them back where I had to call when my account was suspended (Twice actually) but I have a horrible post office where I live so It wasn't their fault and very understanding when I called.

Theirs only one bad experience I had is when I received a broken dvd reported it ask for other and the sent the same broken dvd back to me. I learned when a dvd goes missing or broken I don't ask for a immediate replacement,I wait awhile and then put back up on my queue.

"Ballbuster" (As Odinn 7 calls it) really had no appeal to me. I don't live near one (walking distance) and driving its actually out of my way.Their in store selection is just terrible so I couldn't see their online being any better. If their raising their rates like that I suspect their in trouble.

I've lost count of the number of broken DVD's I've sent back just to get the same one sent back to me. So I got to were if I got a broken DVD you know that one side cracked, I went ahead and made 2 pieces out of it so I wouldn't get it again. I've gotten 3 broken this month out of 5 received. I received one this afternoon that was broken and it was shipped (so they say) on the 13th. I've gotten at least a dozen wrong movie in the right sleeve.

I think you are correct as to BB being in trouble I have a good friend that is a manager of one and she now manages 3 stores in 3 different town. She said they've already closed 2 in the area so she wants to make sure she has a job if they close more. Hedging her bets. The staff at the ones here are real nice but there selection sucks. Movie Gallery here has all the good movies, at least 10 times the titles as BB storefront has.

How often does Netflix raise their rates?

Cheez, in two years we've only have one rate change, and that was a REDUCTION earlier this year.

Have any of you Netflixies used the MOD (Movie on Demand)? Download thingy? Is it decent and can you save the movies to view later? Or is it just a stream?

Thanks folks for info.

Just a stream but it remembers where you left off on a film and will allow you to resume the film.

I've been with Netflix for about 2 years now and like the others, have had no problem with them. I live about a mile from the local distribution center, so turn around time for movies is very quick. Even on the one movie at a time plan, I can go through 8 to 12 films a month. A great deal for less than ten bucks.

the only downside is sometimes if you rent a rare title you have to wait a couple days if they don't have a copy at your local distribution center.  But when you return it will go back to your local place so you don't have to wait again.  that's about the only problem I've had.  very satisfied otherwise

Do to the extreme kindness of one of the members here, I have been granted a gift membership to Netflix. I have queued up ...

Videodrome
The Creeps
Skreiker
Fido
Hideous
The Toxic Avenger
Parasite
Dead Heat
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
The Crazies

and a few more ... site said may first movie ships Monday, will see what the turn around time is and if it's good, I'll be upping the account and keeping it. Haven't tried streaming anything yet, might do that tomorrow.

Thanks Santa Clause (if that is your real name), I owe you one.

How often does Netflix raise their rates?

Net Flix's rate since they started has been raised I think $3 ($18 now, right?), and they've had the 3-a-month plan for more than 5 years.  All in all, I'd say adjusted for inflation it's actually cheaper now than ever.

BTW, Blockbuster has been in trouble for quite a while.  You remember when they got rid of late fees?  That caused a massive loss of revenue, and almost bankrupted the chain.  I used to know a guy who was a district manager in the area, apparently he's updated his resume and such just in case...
