church destroyed from hospital bed

Anyone know the film my boyfriend keeps yammering on about from the following details?

The central character is a man (apparently we are unclear on this...) who may or may not be possessed (or he might be the devil himself...) but basically, the cool part is the film culminates with a church crumbling while said protagonist is lying in hospital.

Yah.  This is all I really have to work with.  Suspected era is 70s, my guess is that it is British (not just because the bf is, but because it truthfully doesn't sound interesting enough to be Italian!)  Chances are, it isn't really a B-movie, but I figured someone here might have a better idea than myself!

Definitely "The Medusa Touch" with Richard Burton, Lino Ventura and Lee Remick, directed by Jack Gold and based on the equally chilling book.

This is one film that haunts my nightmares from time to time: the South African censors wanted it banned due to the scene at the end where "evil is seen to triumph".
