We're all just victims of circumstance

« on: January 06, 2008, 08:19:32 PM »

A UK series and spinoff of the new Doctor Who series.  It follows the members of an organization set by Queen Victoria to be on the watch for alien influences and intruders  and to find technology to help fight them (Kind of a British men in black).  Torchwood was setup because of an incident involving the Doctor.

The series is set in modern times and the Torchwood team it follows is lead by Captain Jack Harkness, an American, who has had few adventures with Doctor himself.

Intended unlike Doctor Who , for an adult audience.  They don't hold back on the language or the gore.

A friend had downloaded the first season and given me a copy.

I watched an espisode yesterday called Countrycide, where the team is investigating some missing persons in a rural district. Although they have theories about alien abduction, the story plays out as a pretty creepy horror tale. Seem the local villagers aren't missing, but taking part in a ritual called the harvest. Can we say cannibals?

Like I said the series is for adults and can be seen on Saturday nights on BBC America if you have it.

If you can you should check it out.

You gotta love the Kaiju-like villain in the final episode of series one. Thumbup

Series two starts in just 10 days!

This has become one of the programs that I find I must see, one thing about BBC America is that they show the previous weeks episode just ahead of the new episode so if you miss it one week you can catch up the next. I've also taken to watching Dr. Who which precedes the two Torchwood episodes. They are both very good series, well worth watching. Smile Thumbup TeddyR

Never give up on love

« Reply #3 on: January 08, 2008, 12:11:19 AM »

I never watched Torchwood when it was on.  I did watch the new Dr Who and loved it.  From what I could tell on the forums over here, those who watched Torchwood consistently bagged it something awful.

And because the free to air tv station executives over here are mouthbreathers, it kept changing time slots and days and now I don't know when it's on.

I think I'll just buy the DVDs and be done with it.

I used to work on saturday nights so I was always missing this show on BBC:A but these days I'm home watching my daughter so I get a triple whammy of Top Gear followed by Dr. Who which I absolutely love (the current Doctor is my favorite of them all) and then Torchwood which took a little time to grow on me but I love where it's going.

I grew up watching Doctor Who and was very excited when the new series came out. I started watching Torchwood as soon as I learned about it and fell in love with it too. A top notch drama with some laughs. Haven't seen much of season two because of when I work, the it seems to keep getting better.

TORCHWOOD and the new DOCTOR WHO series are about the best genre TV offerings out there these days. Sci-Fi Fun and Adventure, although on occasion there's thoughtful, chilling stories thrown into the mix as well, not that unlike the classic sci-fi and horror of yesteryear.

I'm completely hooked on Torchwood (and the new Dr. Who for that matter).  It's just an amazingly well done TV show, and it's one that I make sure to watch, even though I don't really have time for TV or even movies right now.

on a very trivial note: torchwood is an anagram for doctor who.

I think the "Torchwood" name came about as a security measure in order to keep the scripts for the first new series of "Dr Who" secret to avoid any plot details being released to the press. Not a bad show really but I never can really get into it. However, the latest series ending is a cracker.

I just heard of this, and it sounds pretty good but I don't have BBC.  I'll try for DVD.
