Wait, they're Belgian? And all these years I've been suffering under the delusion they were French!

My first introduction to the Smurfs came in the mid- to late-1970s, when I found a little plastic figurine of a Smurf lying on the sidewalk one day. It was about 1-2 inches tall and was holding a golf club. My friend and I had no clue what it was and ended up throwing it away.
