We're all just victims of circumstance

« on: February 06, 2008, 10:39:30 AM »

Last night (Feb.5, 2007) Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama got smashed by tornadoes . The death count is currently 46.

Here in Arkansas we have 13 dead and don't know how many missing.  We were lucky that we live in the central part of the state and all we got was some straight line wind  that blew a few signs down and took out one of my neighbor's flag pole.  We were without power for about 5 hours.

I hope no one from the board here was adversely affected by the storms.

Katie told me about this early this morning.  I'm glad that you are safe and sound.  Sounds like the weather caught people off guard.  That's always bad.

I just now heard about this from a friend I have down in Louisiana.  He said that his whole neighborhood was ripped apart.  Luckily his place made it through unscathed.

We are currently feeling what is left of those winds here in NC.  I can hear it howling outside right now, although it's nowhere near being as bad as it was down there.

I'm glad you're okay.

That sucks you guys get tornados.  I can't imagine how scary that would be.  Lately we've been lashed with wicked storms, torrential rain and flash flooding.  So many stupid kids go swimming and boarding in the floods and get sucked down drains never to be seen again.

A couple of kids just yesterday got swept away by the floods and they haven't found them yet.

I stayed up until 3AM last night keeping an eye out while the family slept we had straight line winds of at least 80MPH and about 4" rain in just a couple of hours. I'm not sure how many people were killed in KY but I think it was 7 or 10. Then after I finally felt like it was safe enough to go to bed, I woke up sick as a dog.

This has been on my mind all day.  I cannot imagine having the shelter over my head ripped away, though I've been through a few hurricanes where I thought it might.  Footage of the devastation on the news is mind boggling.  I often remind my friends that we never know what tomorrow might bring.

That sure was one big storm that swept through parts of the South & Midwest.
You guys got tornados while here in Iowa, we got almost 12 inches of snow dumped on us.   Buggedout

Glad to hear everyone is ok.   Smile

Thanks for the good thoughts everybody. We were really never in any danger, but it sure made a mess in the northern part of the state. Evidently Tennessee got the worst of it .

We got some strong storms here, but the tornadoes hit to the south and east of where I live. Lawrence County, AL got pretty hard, at least 5 killed by the storms. major damage to houses and property also. This part of the state gets tornadoes and severe thunderstorms fairly regularly, it's something people talk about a lot but we often get lured into a false sense of safety since it is so scattershot who actually gets the kind of damage that so many got this week.

A good friend of mine recieved serious damage to his roof the week before due to straight line winds dumping a tree on his house the week before, the tree was a good distance away so the winds had to be pretty rough to move it that far. Minor storm compared to this week, but he spent the week trying to repair a gaping hole in his roof.

Never been in the middle of a tornado myself, had some close calls, one passed over the area near my house when I was in college but it never touched ground, close call for sure.
