Okay, we've got some interesting new announcements for you today. First up, Universal has set The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection: Volumes 1 & 2 for release on DVD on 5/13 (SRP $59.98). The set will feature 10 films on 6 discs, including Tarantula, The Mole People, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Monolith Monsters, Monster on the Campus, Dr. Cyclops, Cult of the Cobra, The Land Unknown, The Deadly Mantis and The Leech Woman. All will be in their original aspect ratios, and the widescreen films will be anamorphic.

It's about time!  I managed to get vol. 2 but it was stupid making these Best Buy exclusives in the first place, and I'm sure a lot of folks will feel like suckers for paying $100 bucks for the first set on eBay.  I mainly wanted a copy of The Incredible Shrinking Man and I still might buy the Region 2 release (which is $11.64 on amazon.co.uk at current exchange rates, plus however much they charge for shipping) instead.

I always hate to see DVDs go out of print and becoming hideously expensive for people to buy.  "Flash Gordon" was like that before the new release and the "Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection Volume 1" had suffered the same fate.  Even worse, it had a couple of really good classics, like "Monolith Monsters" and "Tarantula."

It's probably the scariest movie about rocks ever made.

Actually, I like it because it took the risk and tried something different.  The scenes of the monoliths growing and toppling are also neat.
