To me, the US Marine Corps is a band of brave men and women doing a wonderful job and to them I say: Well done and thank you.  Smile Thumbup

But those that say that the Corps is "recruiting our youth to go to Iraq to be killed" I say  Hatred.

These people should listen to the Duncan Faure song "Let It Be Right" sometime: a song by a South African artist thanking those men and women for their sacrifice.

The people of Berkeley, CA would not have the freedom to make complete and utter asses of themselves if it were not for the courage and self-sacrifice of the U.S. marines and other armed forces.  What a hopelessly screwed up city.

What a hopelessly screwed up city.

I used to work in Berkeley and you are absolutely right. Then again, the entire San Fransisco Bay Area is full of wackos that represent the worst of the more liberal/left wing minded.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

Yeah, heard about that before... and similar stuff, like ROTC groups being banned at High schools in that area, them trying to ban military recruiting on campuses, etc.  I agree with what someone else, if they ban military recruiting at a campus, then I say they should pull ALL Federal funding from the college.

I'm a bit of liberal minded person myself and this might not be a popular opinion but if what BTM says about the high schools not having ROTC or recurits on premises I have to say I'm with that. High school kids are young and very impressible so that might not know what their in for and just sign up because their depressed or want chicks and like that uniform. I seen happen at my old high school.

As for college campus I feel people are older and they can make they choice for themselves. So I can't see the big deal with that. At my college the Army ROTC buliding is not on campus but in the back of the school thanks to protesters back in Vietnam era that didn't want it their. I thought that was a good idea that can appease eveyone, Have it near the school but not on the premise.

As for the city that just makes no sense to me. Its their if people want to join. Its not forcing people into joining. I mean I never believed in any recuriter for anything in my life and was always skepctial into what they do tell me but if someone wants to join its their.

Without parental consent you must be 18 to join the military. I joined when I was 17 with consent, mainly because I wanted away from my house. I think at the time the feeling was mutual.

As for SF Bay area including Berkley I use to have to go out there for work, SF is a beautiful city, but if THE BIG ONE should hit and it all slide into the abyss I won't miss it. I been out of of the Corps for a long time, I still have a Marine haircut and Marine tattoos and I'd get comments from these left wing wackos about how evil the military was and we're all killers of women and children ... and they never saw the irony in fact that they couldn't say FREELY the things they said without us providing that freedom in the first place.
I'd point it out and they'd say "You didn't give me anything!" and just smile and say ... "Right ... keep believing that, me and millions now, before and after me insure your right to be an idiot."

Funny how soon as the Government starting talking about cutting their money off the Mayor of Berkley issued a former apology to the Marine Corps.

CheezeFlixz, There is something I don't know if its new but my friend was going to join the Marines and it was his junior year so he was about 16-17 and his parents weren't going to give him consent but he signed some contract that as soon as high school was done he was going straight into the Marines. Which he would 18 as school was done. I don't know how that "contract" holds up because he was underage(Might have been a recruiter B.S. or something) but I remember he wanted to back out and his guidance counselor was trying his hardest to break it which he did.

I hope I'm not coming off as Anti-military. I do wish their wasn't a need for any of it and just be peace.

Rich,

All branches of the service are from age 17 to 45. Only persons of 17 years of age, with parental permission, can join the U.S. armed services. It's been that way for as long as I can recall, gone are the days of WWI and WWII were you just said you were an age and got in, since about Korea you've had to prove your age.
Not taking you as anti military nor pro military, just wanted to clear up any confusion regarding the legal age of acceptance into the armed forces.

Ah, but here's the thing, many of the same schools in liberal areas that are banning ROTC groups from high schools DO have clubs in those SAME high schools for gay and lesbian teenagers.  I could use the same argument that you did there, saying high school kids, young, impressionable, some uncertain of their sexuality (as many people are when they're that age), and lonely, might just join out of curiosity and now they're open to recruitment into a lifestyle that many believe to be immoral (just as many believe serving in the military is immoral.)

And, for the record, I could care less if someone's gay, fine by me, but do we really need a SCHOOL SPONSORED support group for such things?  Local community group, fine, but a school club?

There has been a protest in front of Berkeley city hall all day long today. One moron even waved a sign that read "Stop Bush's death pimps." It's one thing to oppose the war in Iraq (I'm not overly fond of it myself), but to attack those who serve our country in such a fashion just makes me sick. More than person said that they don't want to see the youth of  the area killed or turned into killers by being recruited. Um....isn't that their choice to make? I'm pretty sure we don't just grab kids off the street and haul them off to boot camp. Since 9/11, it's been pretty obvious that joining any arm of the military is by no means a safe thing to do. Yet, these morons want to take away that choice for those young people who "don't know better." Please. Lookingup

Thankfully, there were a lot of people out there today to support the Marines. A lot came from towns near where I live, which tend to have a higher number of conservative/right wing minded.

Just for the record, I despise extreme liberals and extreme conservatives. Both have no concept of reality IMO. Wink

Agreed, the EXTREME LIBERALS think Bush is to blame for everything, and are ripe with government plots, the EXTREME CONSERVATIVES believe Bush can do no wrong.

I don't agree with everything going on in the war, but if people think that if we should just pack up and come home and mind our business that the radical Islamics are just going to leave us alone then they are nuts!!  And some out there in Berkeley believe if we come home it will just go away ... hell we have some running for president that believe that.
I was watching some interviews of some of the folks from Code Pink and I swear it hurt my head to listen to them and try to understand how their thinking works ... it's just mind boggling. No grasp of reality at all just some fantasy world.

The city council in Berkley should read some of Kipling's poetry, specifically "Tommy", or maybe they could pull their lips up over their heads and then down over their ears, that way they could hear what they say before it comes out of their mouthes and know in advance how stupid they sound.
