I bought this at the flea market...(my market place for tapes out here in BF Egypt) ... used VHS for $2.00 .

Cripes. It really hit home for me,for a number of reasons.
Though I was born in NYC...we left when I was 4,moved upstate to Wappinger Falls-on to Milton ,then Poughkepsee.

Then Ma and Dad got divorced.

Anyway...I don't wanna make a life story outta this - I ended  up in Michigan from the age of 7 until 16-and I hitchhiked back to NYC...that was in 1979.

Talk about culture  shock! I didn't try to sell my ass, but I had a hard time of it on the street for a while.

Well-anyhow...beyond the personal chords the film hit with me...it's just a dam fine piece of 70's flashback...and Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman are PERFECT in their roles. The music is great too! RECOMMENDED!!!

I watched the movie first, then read the book over the summer.  I loved both equally, but I think the book was slightly better, since it explained some things more with the characters and their backgrounds so it made so much more sense.

Great movie, probably in my top 10 of all time.  My favorite scene is at the end of the 2nd "Everybody's Talkin'" montage, right after Joe Buck has arrived in NYC.  He passes a man lying face down, not moving, in the street.  Joe looks at the man lying there with obvious concern.  The camera cuts to a long scene of the people on the street walking right past him without even glancing down.  Joe Buck stares at him, looks around at the people walking past, then turns and walks away.  The scene lasts less than thirty seconds, but it says so much about human nature.

One of my favorite movies of all time.  I love movies that capture the essence of New York City . . . especially the more "questionable" neighborhoods (e.g., MIDNIGHT COWBOY, MEAN STREETS, THE FRENCH CONNECTION, SHAFT, TAXI DRIVER, CRUISING).  It seems like many of the best NYC movies were released in the 1960s and 70s.

Great movie, even better book.

What's funny is the movie originally got an X rating and was the 1st X rated movie at that time to win Best Picture or any Academy Award for that matter.

They ended up getting the rating changed to a R in the early 70's.

I think the surface tragedies hide one of film's all-time great buddy stories.

TCM showed it recently.  It is a buddy picture, for sure, and a downer.
