We're all just victims of circumstance

« on: February 27, 2008, 03:54:47 PM »

Love the guy, hate him,  or just couldn't understand what he was saying? Buckley did have a way of thinking that did make you think.

Here are a few quotes.

I won’t insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said.

I’d rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University.

Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.

A Conservative is a fellow who is standing athwart history yelling “Stop!”

It had all the earmarks of a CIA operation; the bomb killed everybody in the room except the intended target!

Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could.

Truth is a demure lady, much too ladylike to knock you on your head and drag you to her cave. She is there, but people must want her, and seek her out.

All adventure is now reactionary.

I get satisfaction of three kinds. One is creating something, one is being paid for it and one is the feeling that I haven’t just been sitting on my ass all afternoon.

RIP.  great quotes.  He was a very witty and talented guy, but he watered down conservatism alot to make it more popular.   in trying to rid the movement of extreme elements he kind of threw the baby out with the bathwater.  thus we now have big government conservatism.

I respected the man. He said what he meant, and meant what he said.
Didn't agree with all he said...but so what? It was always food for thought.

He is indeed a great loss, I have many of his book and subscribe to National Review. (I know you're shocked.)

He will be missed, rest well Bill, you've earned it.

I used to subscribe to National Review as well.  I think the thing I always admired about Mr. Buckley was the great depth of his religious beliefs.  I remember reading an article where he was talking about his days at school, and how he found such inner peace because of his beliefs.  I'm an athiest, and the things he said really made me wish I had a strong set of beliefs to draw strength from and give me some sense of higher purpose, as he did.

Here you go, read all about him.  He was best known by many as having the largest vocabulary in the world.  His use of large obscure words was legend. In debates he often befuddled his opponents because they didn't know what he saying.

Charlie Rose did an hour-long show on Buckley last night, and on it Buckley came across as more likable than I'd ever seen.

It's sad to see him go. I enjoyed his intellectual thought and his manner of speaking. He was a colorful individual.
