http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072179/ This movie was part of one of those 50 pack Mill Creek deals (
Chilling Classics), the back synopsis made it out to be a run of the mill horror movie:
A young couple decide to look up an old friend while vacationing in California. While camping out, two strangers appear and briefly talk to the couple before leaving. The strangers come back that night by subduing the man and assaulting the woman. What other fiendish plans do the strangers have in store for the couple? Sounds like a by the numbers horror film right? What they fail to mention is the close to 45 minute (out of 74) chunk of time before they even meet the strangers. Here are some highlights from that 45 minute chunk:
- Introduced to about 3 characters that get a lot of development and screen time, only to never be seen again.
- a gas station attendant sings a song for the couple.
-A man drinking a warm beer.
- a joyful romp up a gentle slope.
- A bear eats some of their food (the couple's camping knowledge is all over the place. They didn't know to tie their food up in a tree, but later they seem to be able to identify which berries are good to eat.)
- a debate over whether or not the bear was cute or annoying.
- Mindless hiking
They finally arrive at the friend's (Robert Englund!) shack in the woods and meet the strangers like the synopsis says. The strangers also do later show up and assault/battery/rape the woman. The next day the boyfriend finds the strangers in the woods and fights them. The bad guys run off, the girlfriend reads a poem and the movie ends. Yes it literally just ends without really tying up the loose ends. Go back and read the synopsis from the box, now read how the movie ends. It was one of the first times I ever felt cheated after watching a movie.
