Please explain how I can reproduce two whole paragraphs and still somehow be quoting him "out of context."

For those of you who have trouble following along, I KNOW that lester himself doesn't think that "muslims are all bad and need to be nuked."  He is asserting that that is somehow an acceptable view for the rest of the board, possibly even the consensus, while his own views on wars are being singled out for rejection.   So that I won't foundlessly be accused of taking him out context again, here is the entire paragraph one more time:

Quote
again, i will stick to lighter subjects.  But I honestly don't see why there is such a big fuss about this stuff.  it's okay to say that muslims are all bad and need to be nuked, but not that maybe we could have ended slavery peeacefuly like every other civilized nation instead of 600,000 people, virtually none of whom had anything to do with slavery, being slaughtered.

And I will say again (and hope against hope that reading comprehension crawls into this thread sometime soon) that for lester to imply that the rest of the board, or even a sizeable contingent thereof, holds that "it's okay to say that muslims are all bad and need to be nuked" is an unsupportable strawman. Such a stance, to my knowledge, does not exist among the posters on this board, and to imply that it does is intellectually dishonest and repugnant.

So again, please show where I am misstating lester's words.  Further unsupported bleating of "Out of context! Out of context!" will not be be met with more clear explanation which obviously isn't being comprehended; I'll simply file the bleater under "Idiot."

I'll be happy to:

"it's okay to say that muslims are all bad and need to be nuked"

"it's okay to say that muslims are all bad and need to be nuked"

"it's okay to say that muslims are all bad and need to be nuked"

"it's okay to say that muslims are all bad and need to be nuked"

"it's okay to say that muslims are all bad and need to be nuked"

"it's okay to say that muslims are all bad and need to be nuked"

Not only in the full reply of yours, which I have quoted, have you made reference to that specific snippet 2 additional times, with quotes, but have continually made reference to that snippet throughout this thread; taking everything he wrote to mean only that one snippet, which I had previously posted that it was part of a larger sentence.

If you are looking for reading comprehension, look to yourself first. Get out of your tunnel vision and look at the whole statement.

I won't lower myself to calling you any unworthy names, but do keep in mind that this is just a reply from someone in your "idiot file" and doesn't mean much; so you probably should just ignore it.

I am just glad we live in a place that we can talk about stuff like this and nobody will be jailed or killed for it.

And tell me, O wonderfully intelligent Menard, just how my quote of lester is taken out of context?  How is the sense of what lester said different if one sees the whole paragraph?  A statement is not "out of context" simply because it is excerpted; it falls to you to show how, by quoting that line (even though I then showed it in its entire paragraph), I have somehow done violence to lester's meaning.

Conversely, you could keep bleating.  You seem to be good at it.

It always disturbs me to see Lester's negative karma.  He posts some controversial things, sometimes with less tact than he should, but he never comes across as terribly rude to me.  I don't think someone should lose karma just because their position is disagreeable, so long as they're not blatantly trolling.  And there's a difference in my mind between being provocative and posting insincerely just for the joy of inciting arguments.

The WWII thread probably went too far, but other than that I have no problem with his political posts.  Actually, I just skip them.  I do like his movie posts, though.

I interpreted the "muslims are all bad and need to be nuked" comment as hyperbole, as in "people are allowed to post [exaggerated position] but not [my position]."  [Exagerated position] is chosen for rhetorical effect, not because he actually thinks people literally believe this.

Of course it's perfectly legitimate to point out that [exagerated position] is an exaggeration.  But I think that could be a bit of a strawman itself, if you translate Lester's original point as "I get called out for my opinions, but other people say controversial things and don't get threads devoted to them."

Bumped your karma back up by one, Lester.

I am officially NOT taking sides between Menard and nshumate, though.  This thread started out as lighthearted fun, admittedly at Lester's expense, but seems to be taking an ugly turn.

Hell, i'm ready to abandon it myself, and I started it!  Between the hyperbole that went far beyond all reason in search of justification, to Menard's failure to understand the difference between "excerpted" and "taken out of context," this thread seems to have become a lightningrod for smallmindedness.  I hope the rest of the board is benefiting by it.

If you cannot take the flak in the thread you started, feel free to abandon it.

Let me count up the totals:

1) I've been called an idiot

2) I've been called small-minded

3) I've been called, smarmingly, 'O wonderfully intelligent Menard'.

I have not resorted to calling you anything; looks like I'm ahead by 3.

Well, I see that everyone has been riled up.  Perhaps taking some time, like sleeping on it, might help keep everything civil.

When someone sends me an email that gets my blood up, I am quite apt to not answer for a few days and mull over my response in the odd free time so that I am less likely to answer in a "shooting from the hip" fashion.

All men are bastards and there's too much immigration and not enough white people.  Anyone who disagrees is a communist.

Discuss.

I am not...nor have I ever been, a member of the communist party....but I'll consider it if they serve food and free drinks and have dancing topless girls. My wife calls me a sawed off little basterd quite often. And I think that there are way too many people -of ALL races....the ratio of people to Bigfeet (?) and other non-human enities is outrageous...more Mothmen and chupacabras need to be bussed in to the more populated areas.
