This is one of my own stories. Keep in mind that the picture is after they'd been working for a couple of days at getting it out. It was in over the cab before that.

So that's what keeps the excavator population in check - a natural predator.

When clearing is complete, the muskeg will be excavated and backfilled with rock.

In hindsight, maybe they should have done the "backfill with rock" part first.

They had to get the trees off first. I was kind of amazed that they would be using excavators on muskeg in late April without mats, frost or not.

The ministry is in the middle of building over 40 kilometres of freeway, and this is typical of the landscape, except for the hills of solid granite. On the plus side, they can blast through the hills and fill the bogs with the rubble. The blasting is a weird thing to get used to. I've been sitting in a meeting near one of the sites, and suddenly there's this dull rumble, the windows rattle and a vibration goes through the room. Nobody even pauses.
