Has anyone ever used mothballs before?  I've read several times that they help rid your house of numerous pets.  The past few nights I've heard something under our house near the bedroom and smelled skunk.  Today I purchased a box of moth balls and threw a handful where the area in question was.

I guess my main concern is having the scent of mothballs coming into the house from underneath.  I threw roughly 10 or so scattered in the area.   Should I be concerned with my house reeking after a few days?

I've used them before, for the recommendation to get rid of snakes under a home; I suppose it would work for various animals.

I used the whole damn box and, being that there was a separation in the flooring (the reason for the concern) that was in the process of being repaired, you could barely keep from tearing up due to the moth ball smell coming into the house.

Do keep in mind that, as I mentioned, there was a separation in the flooring.

About 10 mothballs probably won't do much as far as smell goes (some people use more than that in a closet). It probably won't do much as far as getting rid of strays either as the idea is to make it unpleasant for them to be under the house.

We live in a mobile home so unfortunately things can get underneath rather easy which sucks.  My main concern is my son (who is 2) inhaling that stuff and or course my wife/myself inhaling it as well.   I guess the one good thing is the moth balls are far from being out in the open so I don't have to worry too much about anything ingesting them.

So far, I've only noted a faint smell coming in through the bathroom.  I guess my option, if need be, is to take them out if it gets too overwhelming.  But like you said Menard, I doubt it will be a big deal seeing there is only 10 or so.   The whole box for my surroundings would have been a disaster. Thanx for the advice.   Thumbup

My recommendation would be to call Andrew.

He does hand-to-hand combat with hornets.

He'll devise a plan of attack involving lots of tactics, smear grease paint all over his face, crawl under the trailer with a dagger clinched between his teeth, and before you know it your problem will be solved with varmints running and screaming 'that's one crazy hillbilly'.

As legend goes, he punched every last one of those hornets in the face too.    BounceGiggle

I nearly swallowed a few of these when I was a kid: my Mom nearly tore my mouth open trying to get at them. I can still hear her shouting "Don't swallow them!".

Maybe I should ask our beloved Gunny if he can come and deal with our wasp problem here at the Film Archives? I got stung twice a few months back.  Buggedout

I tried using mothballs, but you need to catch a lot of the guys to get enough for any possile application.  And its really hard work and cruel to remove them while the moths are still alive.

My father used them before since rabbits and squirrels were getting in flower beds and eating the plants especially our cantaloupe plants, which used to drive my dad crazy to no end.  He tried lots of different things to get them to go away, moth balls, fox urine.  That pretty much kept them away.  Our last option would be to just put our one dog Misha out there on patrol every day since she is a Basenji which is a type of hound dog that is rare in America.  I told my dad that we could just stick her outside and when she would see them she would chase them down or away.  In her case, she would chase them down and kill them as she has done in the past.

Yep, I gave you karma for that one.  It actually took me a minute to get sorry to say.
