I was in one of our local Dollar General stores the other day when, before my eyes, was a box of cereal I had not seen in I don't know how long:

I checked the date on the box, and it was current. TeddyR

I didn't realize that this was still made.

On the back of the box is a comic strip that is loaded with bad puns. It is a two parter; the second part is on the website. Actually, both parts are on the website; the comic strip and an animated cartoon as the second part. It is rather odd, to say the least.

http://www.quisp.com/

The last time I recall having eaten the cereal was in 1969. I was a 5 year old kid then, munching on the cereal straight from the box while on the news was the latest about the police breaking up an anti-war protest and streakers (interesting times, those were).

Do you remember Quisp?

What breakfast cereal were you eating as a kid?

Oh, yes! Our local Dollar General is selling Quisp, as well. I bought a box about a week ago and ate my way through the whole thing in a day or so. I checked the box date, too, just to make sure they hadn't found a crate left over from 1972 in a back room somewhere.

Can Quake and (yum) Quangaroos be far behind?!?

Orange-flavored cereal: it was better than it sounds.
Really.

Small | Large

And one of my favorite cereals, which was only around unfortunately for a very short time:

. . . and one of the most disgusting cereals ever made:

Punch Crunch tried to compensate for it's yeechy fruity lameness by including a knife FREE INSIDE!

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't believe that pink hippo sailor is wearing any pants.

In the morning I eat oatmeal with a fistful of raisins, cinnamon, and no sugar at all with plain cold green tea or green/black tea blend that I brew myself.  That being said, I just don't eat boxed cereal at all anymore, and though I liked FROSTED FLAKES, I think CAP'N CRUNCH (which I imagine tastes quite different than I remember) was my favorite; the box changed quite a bit over the years that I ate the stuff, this must be it now:

Sugar Pops!

Toys...or paper records (usually of the Archies or the Monkees), or at least Cut out collecter cards of the US Presidents. I remember one cereal that had cool monster mini posters, of Frankenstein or the Creature from the Black Lagoon!

My two ultimate favs are Fruit Loops and Apple Jacks with Trix as an honorable mention.  I did dabble into Mr. T cereal but found it rather unlikeable.

Oh man! I LOVED Quisp! I was so sad when it wasn't available anymore. I am heading to Dollar general on my way home to see if I can get some.

I had a mail order gun from Quisp that would shoot a cloud of flour...I thought that gun was great. One day, my uncle was over and he was wearing a suit...I shot him with it...the flour was all over his suit. He was cool about it but the next day I couldn't find the gun and surprisingly, nobody seemed to know where it went.  Lookingup

Edited to add:

I just found this picture online...oh, the memories...

Never give up on love

« Reply #10 on: May 19, 2008, 07:30:08 PM »

When I was a kid, Kelloggs were pretty much the only company that made cereal.  I'm sure they had muesli and stuff in the supermarket, but my mum never bought it and  I didn't even know it existed until I was an adult.

I remember eating  Strawberry Pops (delicious, but no longer around  Bluesad), Honey Smacks, Froot Loops, Coco Pops and Frosties.  Nutri Grain was a huge deal when it came out and I loved it then, but can't stand it now. And I really loved Special K which is still delicious especially now they've put berries in it.

Funny thing though.  Special K in Australia is way different from the North American version.  Ours is very malty like Ovaltine, whereas the other isn't.  On the whole, I prefer the Aussie version.  I don't eat much cereal now.  I'm not a milk drinker like I was when I was a kid.  I don't mind soy milk with cereal, but I've grown out of eating breakfast.
