A butler from the whitehouse says WINSTON CHURCHILL liked a big glass of sherry in the morning as an eye-opener, and then, with lunch, would begin drinking scotch and soda, and with dinner had to have his champagne followed by 90-year-old brandy... then he went to work...!!   BounceGiggle  TeddyR

No, but I read Conrad Black's massive FDR: Champion of Freedom a couple of years back.  Excellent, thoroughly researched biography, probably will be the standard for a generation.

My grandfather was a businessman who was sunbjected to FDR's ridiculous depression lengthening "new deal".  as a big thank yuo for getting taxed at a 90% rate and regulated nearly out of existence,  FDR then sent him to commit terrorist attacks on german cities from thousands of feet above, something that haunted him till his death.  so no, I missed it

was it good?

I am not a huge fan of FDR, however, the New Deal probably saved America from falling prey to either a communist dictatorship or some totalitarian, right-wing takeover.  The New Deal did NOT end the Depression, but we don't know for sure that it lengthened it either.  What it did do was alleviate the worst of the suffering and give the people some hope in their government again.

The Terror Bombing of Germany was and is controversial; but Germany reaped what it sowed in the bombing of London, Liverpool, and Coventry.  The only reason those cities weren't as utterly destroyed as Hamburg, Dresden, and Berlin was his lack of heavy bombing aircraft, but not through any lack of intent.  War is an ugly business, but your grandfather did what was necessary to bring it to an end.  The blood of those German civilians is on Hitler's hands, not his.

FDR was IMHO the closest thing we had to a socialist leader we've ever had, I understand that when he took office that nearly 1 in 4 was unemployed, but creating a bunch of government jobs is just socialism. Some tax rate on individuals under FDR were over 90% ... now if that's not socialism I don't know was is. Talk about tax the rich, the middle class and the poor, take all there money so you can provide them a job to tax.
Now here is a kicker he got us into WWII and then later cut veteran benefits by over 40% and took away over half million widows and children survivor benefits. Yeah FDR was a hell of a guy. Luckily for the Vet's got a bill passed that FDR vetoed but he was overridden by congress. But I guess that's classic democrats mentality, cut the military and ignore the veterans even if you get us into a war.
now he made some hard choices and many of them were right, but as with anyone some of them were wrong.

I will have to check out the book Indy noted, I haven't read anything about him a long, long time.

If you are NOT an FDR fan, you would enjoy Thomas Fleming's THE NEW DEALER'S WAR.  He takes a wrecking ball to Roosevelt's reputation as a war leader, and presents some good research to prove his case.

agree w/ cheezeflix.  the only thing that stood between FDR and a complete dictatorship was the constitution

indiana smith-  I've been meaning to read that.  I read the American Conservative,  wwww.amconmag.com  and takimag.com,  which are paleo conservative.  don't always agree with all of it, but some great minds at work including fleming

My interest in FDR is history.  The program had equal measures of praise and criticism, and leant a discerning eye towards his unusual private life.  My father fought in WWII, so I must be old.  I thought it was an interesting program, and yes, Lester, it was good.   Smile

Well said, AllHallows.  I think that FDR did the things he thought were necessary to save our country - first from the Depression, then from Germany and Japan.  The war took an incredible physical toll on him and eventually killed him.  It is very easy for us who have never had a single life, much less millions of them, hanging in the balance of our decisions to second-guess those who did.

My dad was an 18 year old sergeant in Hawaii, training for the invasion of Japan, when FDR died.  He said that his command master sergeant, a 25 year veteran of two world wars, cried when he heard the news.

Without doubt, Indianasmith, you are the most civil person I have encountered on any forum.  I applaud you.   Thumbup

I really feel that there is value in stories like your father's.  The people loved FDR, but not anyone who had money or was doing well (a small number in a relative sense.)  For this reason alone I am inclined to admire him, flaws, foibles and all.  Thanks for your kindness.  You have the true American spirit.  HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY, my Friend!

When I was a kid in high school, back about 1980 or so, I remember hearing two folks in their 60's talking, and one of them said:

"There's only been one President in my lifetime who gave a damn about the little people, and that was FDR."

You can debate all day about how true that was, or whether FDR was a consummate politician, but the fact remains that the people loved him, and that, by and large, he used the phenomenal power he amassed for what he perceived to be the good of the nation as a whole.  I've read several biographies, from Fleming's slashjob to Nathan Miller's overly admiring work, but really, I think that Black's work is fair, balanced, well-researched, and accurate.  I highly recommend it.

In all fairness to FDR he was the right guy at the right time, but I think some of the long term effects of some of his social programs have ran there coarse and need to be purged from society.
Government needs to help the people in tough times like the recovery from the great depression, but in times of prosperity as we've had many time since then those programs should be abandon, some were, other have become a way of life for many creating a dependency on the system and undermining the American spirit. My grandfather was in WWII and while he is gone now my grandmother tells me the stories of life during WWII. Those of use that only know if it from history books and movies and the Discovery Channel see it through Rose colored glasses, my grandmother recalls it differently.
Rationing, security, storages, black outs, information control etc ... a war like WWII could never be fought today since the government can't control the information, and Hollywood would never produce happy go lucky feel good war time films of the 40's. Nor would the press respect the President enough to not report that he could walk. It's a different world now and while some of it is better, so is not.

indiani-  that book is like a thousand pages long though right?  I've seen it at the bookstore.  I'm not a big fan of Blacks politics, but it was foul the way they got him up in canada.  he was trying to save abunch of moribund newspapers and managed to trigger one of their 5,000  million socialist protectionist laws and got like a massive jail sentence.
