Now I'm not talking in some back ally in the dark of night, I'm talking straight from the government, totally legit, dollar for dollar ... why, you may ask curiously or not?

Well it seems in food stores, at least around here you get a 20% discount with food stamps! Yes ... I did not know this until today when I saw someone buy something and it cost less than I knew it cost, so I asked and I was told that people on food stamps get a 20% discount ... I was like WHAT? The tax payer is paying for there food and they get a discount? Where the hell is my discount for paying cash? Where the hell is my discount for providing jobs? Where the hell is my discount for being a tax payer and not a tax taker? What the crap!

So here's the deal you go to the store and buy a $120 worth of food, you pay only $100 in food stamps whereas if you are using real money, green back, bucks, cash, moolah, dough etc you pay $120. Don't exactly seem right that's those funding the food stamps get screwed twice, because you know the cash customer is paying more to pay for the discount those using food stamps are getting. I know it's my compassion that sets me apart ... well screw compassion. This is the kind of stuff that keeps people on food stamps, why would you want to get off them if you'd not only have to pay for your food but you'd have to pay more on top it. It makes no sense? You want people off that government tit, let them pay more than those paying cash that's incentive to get off the stamps.

So not only am I and you paying taxes to provide provide food stamps to some people, we get to pay full price while those on stamps get a discount. So I want to contact the government and arrange to buy $1000 worth of food stamps per month for $1000 and then I can buy $1200 worth of food for a yearly savings of $2400.00 dollars. That seems reasonable doesn't it? I know I could use a extra 20% off my food bill every year, couldn't you?

So I'm writing my congressman and I'm going to ask I'm where I can buy food stamps, because I need the discount to pay for gas.

No wonder all the people I see using food stamps weigh at least 20% more than I do, they can afford it.

You can probably buy food stamps $0.50 on the dollar.  Most states have switched to systems with names like EBT, which is like a credit card that has the foodstamps credits.  Some shady things count as food stamps items.  But if you knew what to be properly outraged about, it is EBT cash, which isn't foodstamps but actual cash money given each month that they can withdraw like an ATM.  So instead of paying rent, the money withdrawn at the grocery store goes right towards cigarettes or beer.  Also, no tax with foodstamps, so any discount is more than 20% with that added.  When I worked grocery stores we did not have foodstamp discounts, so I don't know whether that is store-specific or something new (or even a scam by the retailer)

Actually, if you do the math, a 20% discount means the money goes 25% farther. If you spend $800 on the same food it normally costs $1000 to buy, that leaves you $200 to buy more food at the same 20% discount, and $200 is 25% of $800, so that's 25% more food for $1000 worth of food stamps, see?

I don't know whether the store is acting legally or not to give them this discount. Gaming this system has been around a while, though, as you can see here:

I was considering getting food stamps as to help with the rising cost of food, but when I looked at the form to fill out, I gave up since there were several things I didn't know (like what my household makes, etc).  Plus the fact that I live with my rents and pay no rent I just said f' it I'm not going to worry about it.

They have those ATM cards for for food stamps here, and there was a minor scandal when they found people were using them at the casinos.  Yeah, so typical.

What makes me mad is the grocery store apparently thinking they're acting "charitably" by giving people with food stamps a discount.  You know damned well they just pass those costs on to the paying customers.  They're not being the least damned bit charitable.  It's like me going over to the neighbor's house and stealing their barbecue grill, and then giving it to a poor person.

Well, for anyone who doesn't agree with stores who use this policy, the answer's easy: don't patronize stores that offer the discount. My guess is that stores who offer this kind of discount are either getting some kind of support from the government for doing so, or they figure that the additional customers they bring in by offering the discount more than makes up for the loss by providing the discount. If you notice that your grocery prices seem to be going up more at these particular establishments than at other stores (likely because of such a program), then by all means, go elsewhere. If the discount hurts their sales by driving off non-stamp customers, then they'll have to reconsider whether their policy benefits their bottom line or hurts it.

Well my wife pointed out to me that if you look at the screen on the register it has 2 totals, 1 for those using food stamps (FST - food stamp total) and 1 for those buying with their hard earned money (CT - cash total).

They use those EBT cards here in KY, which I don't agree with in the least I know they started using the EBT cards to stop abuse which just opened up a entire new can of abuses.

The store in question and there are others is Food Giant, and I've sent a letter to them asking if this is something the store does or the government regulates, if I don't get a reply I'll call them until I do.

I don't think that would be too practical in reality.  Store A has a lot of items that are cheaper than store B, while store B has a lot of different items that are cheaper than store A.  Those additional costs get lost among a zillion other factors.  We try, as much as possible, to buy stuff that's cheaper at one store, and other stuff that's cheaper at another store, buy you know, I'm not going to spend all day typing grocery bills into a spreadsheet just to save six bucks.

What makes me a bit p**sy is the whole idea that they'll be charitable by taking money from other people and helping out the poor.  If they want to help the poor, set up a food drive or have management donate some of their actual paychecks to charity or something.  Don't sneakily swipe the money from their customers and then act as if they're the ones being good samaritans.

I don't know about buying food stamps from the government, but through the end of July, Kroger stores have a program going on where if you buy a $300.00 gift card, 10% is added on for free. They add $30.00 for a $300.00 card, $60.00 to a $600.00 dollar card, and $120.00 to a $1,200.00 card. If you're going to spend money on groceries anyway, why not buy the gift cards and get free funds? Since most large Kroger stores have gas stations, it's basically like getting free gas for shopping there.

You could consider offering a rebuttal, rather than scorn...  Why do you find his complaint to be so unfounded?

Then you're pretty much stuck with one store or the other. And if it turns out that both stores offer the discount incentive? Well, that's between you and management to decide in Thunderdome! TongueOut

You're assuming I have a Kroger near me, the closest one in about 30 miles away. Any saving is negated by by gas cost and time cost. I know I can't buy food stamps from the government buy it would be nice that those people paying full price didn't have to get slapped by seeing folks that get it on our tax dollars get a discount on top of it, as I have it give people the incentive to stay on the government tit and not get on there own feet. The system is designed to keep people dependent and that is good for no one ... some people get it and clearly some people don't.

Ah feel your pain, wonder bread.

You're assuming I care whether there's a Kroger by you. I inherited stock in the company, and I'll plug it anytime, anywhere if for no other reason than a shameless attempt to make myself richer.
