A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: June 20, 2008, 12:19:24 AM »

I watched this one with my wife tonight and was surprised by how good it was.  I figured, like most buddy flicks, that the best lines and jokes would all be in the trailer, but to my surprise, the film was solid throughout, with great lines from Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, and a touching but not overdone premise.

Two older men, one a billionaire and one a mechanic, share a hospital room and find out at the same time that they are dying.  They resolve to carry out a list of actions on their "bucket list" - the things they each hope to do before they kick the bucket.

I'm not gonna go into a huge amount of plot detail, except to say that the movie WORKED.  It was genuinely fun.  As a teaser, here are two great quotes from the principal characters:

FREEMAN:  "Man, I have taken baths that were deeper than you!"

NICHOLSON: "Three things I've learned as I've grown old . . . never pass up a bathroom, never waste a hard-on, and never trust a fart!"

While the wife and I like both of these men very much, based on the trailers that were shown we were both expecting more comedy and not so much sentimental seriousness -- I'm glad you found the humour in it to be good, but to us the sentimental seriousness was laid on a bit thick & it ultimately didn't work for us.  A shame, too, as we both went in wanting to like it very much.

I thought that the movie had it's moments but I felt that it got syrupy and sentimental at the wrong moments most of the time.

Terrific performances all around though.   Thumbup

Though it was a monumental waste of time. They got two terrific leads and all they knew to do with them is that? To add insult to injury, it was marketed as a comedy, when it's more of a drama. But even as a drama is just too boring and lacks any tension.

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

I saw this when it was in the theater.  I thought it was decent, but nothing special.  They really didn't bring anything new to the table in the "people who know they are dying" genre.

I've watched movies about aliens, zombies and cannabilistic puppets but a billionaire and a mechanic sharing the same hospital room flummoxes even my suspension of disbelief.  Smile
