A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: July 30, 2008, 12:38:38 AM »

Corey Feldman reprises his role as Edgar Frog, Surfboard Shaper and Vampire Hunter, in this long overdue sequel to one of the truly great vampire films of the 80's.

Santa Carla, CA is a quaint little town on the California coast with a burgeoning population of vampires and a mile-long list of missing persons.
The film opens with a gang of young vampires murdering an older vampire, played by Tom Savini, and stealing his house.  The next day,  washed-up professional surfer Chris and his hottie sister Nicole move to Santa Carla after the deaths of their parents in a car accident.  Their aunt agrees to rent them a house (a real dump) at a discount rate, since they are family and all.  (She pops into several scenes later on, and you find yourself wishing she would become a vampire snack!  Maybe next sequel.)  The next evening Chris meets surfing legend Shane, who dropped off the circuit a few years previously.  Shane invites the pair to a party at his house, where Chris hooks up with an Oriental hottie who keeps coming out of her bikini, while Shane (played by Angus Sutherland, Keifer's half brother) takes his sister on a tour of the house and gives her a drink from a flask he carries.

Shane disentangles himself from his amorous encounter and comes to his sister's rescue, but she has drunk vampire blood and is now infected, according to Edgar Frog who is waiting for them when they get to their rented home.  He throws Frog out and puts his sister to bed, but then bikini girl shows up again and tries to finish what they started - but when she sprouts fangs, he throws her off of him and she gets impaled on some deer antlers, then turns to stone and explodes.  After that, things in Santa Carla start to get kind of interesting.

This is a good tribute to the original.  The plot is perhaps a little less compelling, but still pretty entertaining.  The vampire deaths are gory and awesome, and there is a great deal more nudity than the original (which, as I recall, had none at all!!).  Corey Feldman steals the scene in every one of his appearances.  Be sure to check out the alternate endings, too, especially if you are a diehard fan of the original.  There's also a wonderful little short called "Edgar Frog's Guide to Staying Alive" on the ways and means of vampire killing.

In short, this movie was a great way to waste a Tuesday night.

I've been wanting to see this one because I thought it looked really cheesy and was certain it would show up in the Bad Movies section.  Thanks for the info!   Thumbup
I'll have to check it out.

Seen it, thought it was utter crap. At first it won me over. The opening is alright, and later the cheap look didn't avoid me enjoying the movie. There's something about coastal places during winter that looks sort of eerie, and I thought it added to the setting. But then it took ages to get going, it had tons of useless pseaudo-stylish moments that didn't add a damn thing, and even the action / horror moments were mediocre.

Then there's Corey Feldman. His hammy acting was funny at first, but after a while I wanted him to get killed by vampires. With extreme prejudice.

I say avoid at all costs, but send copies to your ex-girlfriends. Mwahahahaha!

You do NOT make sequels to films like this. What next, Near Dark 2? This is a classic 80s flick that stood alone in the vamp genre and I thought this film was awful and totally pointless. I'm seriously worried about screen writers and production companies, where are the new ideas? If anyone is reading this who re-makes 80s films or tries to make a quick buck from recycling franchises....DO NOT keep making this bland, embarrassing tripe, what next eh? what next...Bride of Beetlejuice? Rob Zombie presents: Ferris Bueller gets a job? Beverly Hills Cop: Ressurection??  Hatred

This film is awful btw  Thumbdown

Actually, I think there's a fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie in the making.

Yes, there is, and even worse Brett Ratner (X-Men 3, After the Sunset, Rush Hour 1, 2, 3) is directing it. I think the worst part is that they're going to be filming it in Florida.

I don't think Rattner deserves that hack reputation he's getting. And anyway, Martin Brest, Tony Scott and John Landis are not exactly firs rate directors. I don't think he ruins the whole thing.
