Arkansas man buys Wagner baseball card for $1.62M
CHICAGO (AP)—A 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card was sold for $1.62 million at a memorabilia auction in Chicago, a sports auction company said Saturday.

The record price for a baseball card is $2.8 million—paid in 2007 for a near-mint condition Wagner card released in 1909 by the American Tobacco Company.

John Rogers, 35, of North Little Rock, Ark., said his winning bid for the T206 Wagner card is the realization of a decades-long dream.

“I call this the holy grail of baseball cards,” Rogers said in a phone interview. “I’ve looked at a number of other specimens, sat in a few other Wagner auctions. But this is the one that makes collecting worth while.”

Dang!  And to think I traded my 1909 Honus Wagner for a Ken Griffey, Jr. rookie card!

Actually some of the richest people in country live here in may home state.  Remember this is home of Wal-Mart, the Waltons have quite a few billions.

Although, I do wonder sometimes who buys all those million dollar homes I see in the paper.

My wifes boss is quite wealthy. He owns a 7000 square foot house. My wife and the rest of the office went out on his 4 bedroom 2 bath houseboat yesterday.   Orthodontists can make a lot of money.

Well according to forbes you have 4 on the list.

My city is the richest city for the population of under 250000 in the US. And most people haven't heard of it..lol

Literally my crappy apartments overlook half a million dollar homes. And they're small compared to the 40 million dollar homes around the block. People here are wiping their a$$ with it. Meanwhile i'm scraping to get by..crazy when i see people throw it away on a baseball card

For such a limited card, I'm amazed at how many have been sold over the past few years.  Is it the same one bouncing between different owners?

The card is described as high quality for the 100 extant, significantly better in fact than the average.  Priced like an old master painting, the article mentions previous owners including WAYNE GRETZKY...
It does boggle the mind how money, stuff, availability, market and demand, continues to surprise and accelerate.  American ephemera of high quality yields amazing prices.

I remember when Gretzky bought the card back in the early 90s.

There has always been controversy surrounding the card due to Honus Wagner having it removed from the series, supposedly because he did not want to use his image to promote tobacco use; even though he was a non-smoker, he did chew tobacco and even had a card in a later series with him preparing to stuff his cheek with tobacco.
