 John Fahey

how's this for random: I had an e-convo with John Fahey about 9-10 yrs ago. he told me that he really liked sonic youth, of all bands, and that thurston moore was a good friend of his! extremely good guitarist tho', definitely underrated. he just had some re-issues done I think. RIP

In no particular order:
Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu)
Zakk Wylde (Ozzy, BLS)
Michael Gira (Swans, Angels Of Light)
John Lee Hooker
Eddie Van Halen (nobody mentions his rythm playing, which is excellent)
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Gregor Mackintosh (Paradise Lost)
Tommy Victor (Prong)
Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
Scott "Wino" Weinrich (The Obsessed)

Cool to see Lindsey Buckingham getting some props. He's definitely in my top fifteen.

And DUANE ALLMAN, JOHNNY WINTER, and BRIAN SETZER would probably be in my top 20.

I got to see Brian Setzer live on the Dirty Boogie tour. He's an insanely good player. I've always wished that someday I could see him with the Stray Cats.

Santana is pretty good, but man, is he an annoying stoner to listen to in concert.

In order:

1.  Stevie Ray Vaughan
2.  Mark Knopfler
3.  Eddie Van Halen

and I can't rank 'em after that.  I think Page is great, but he's sloppy as all get-out.  Just listen to "Hot Dog" one more time if you're in doubt.  Nowhere near as great a guitarist as Plant is a vocalist.  But hey, it was all Zeppelin, it was all good.  =)

Jimmy Page was/is brilliant in the studio but was hit/miss live. In fact Pete Townsend has always been the same way.  But they're still geniuses though.

I saw STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN about 3 weeks before he was killed in that helicopter crash.  Definitely would be in my top 20, too.  Saw MARK KNOPFLER with ERIC CLAPTON, and maybe I should boot someone from my list now...  Wink  I agree that JIMMY PAGE is damned sloppy (and a huge egotist) but I still listen to LED ZEP and it's getting onto 40 years!!

There are still so many great ones that weren't mentioned. I could make a list of 100 and still end up not quite complete really. Some really great ones made the lists though. (Good call on Alex Chilton there Allhallowsday, Big Star = LOVE)

Personally I never thought SRV was as great as his fans say. People try and compare him to Jimi and I just don't see it. Personally, I feel there's nobody that close to Jimi in any way, , He's firmly cemented in first in my book.

Also, I'm not sure how one could lump Angus and Malcolm Young together, , they're leagues apart. Malcolm is good, , but I don't think he is even top 25.

I'm surprised I'm the only person to put a word in for Randy Rhodes.

Ahh yes, Mr. Rhoads. Just missed out on my top, I know he's better than some of the guys I listed, but that's just my favouritism towards influence and sound.

Also I would like to give honorable mention to Mr. Adrian Vandenberg, who is massively underrated;

I put them together because they are very exciting as a team, but by themselves, they would probably bore me.
