We're all just victims of circumstance

« on: August 24, 2008, 04:28:44 PM »

It's the year 2027 and the earth appears to be a wasteland other than the few crumbling cities. The world is run by four giant corporations who war over what precious resources are left.

During a battle between the Capitol and Bahaus corporations an ancient stone seal is broken releasing an army of necro-mutants from the great machine which produces them. They immediately begin decimating the soldiers on both sides.

On the Capitol side Mitch Hunter(Thomas Jane) and Nathan Rooker(Sean Pertwee) try to hold back the mutants while they get their troops out an air transport.  Mitch makes it out, but Nathan doesn't.

Brother Samuel(Ron Perlman) the head of an ancient order of monks and is the keeper of the Mutant Chronicles, a book which prophesies the coming of the mutants and their destruction, puts together a team which includes Mitch to find the ancient machine and destroy it.

There is very little character development, and the script ain't that great, but I liked  the effects and the action. Because of the lack of resources everything is powered by steam (including spacecraft) and this  gives the film a definite steam punk feel. The washed out backgrounds add to the dismal feel of this world (the only bright color is the almost scarlet blood).

The plot is pretty straight forward and there are some very tense moments and a lot of  really gory battle action.

The mutants are basically the borg. They each have a right arm which is a curved bone blade and they drag the dead and dying into the machine to increase their army.

If you like some serious zombie fighting action with lots of spattering blood this film is for you.

Look for John Malkovich in a small part as the head of the coporations. Also, look for Devon Aoki (Sin City) as one Brother Samuel's team.
