Trevor, my daughter has made a new friend who is South African. She is a 15-year-old redhead named Elise who moved to the US about 8 years ago. Do you know her?  Sorry, my daughter can't pronounce her last name. But now my daughter wants to learn her language (I'm guessing that would be Afrikaans) because she thinks her accent sounds cool.

Unfortunately no, I don't know her at all but I can help your daughter with a few useful phrases in Afrikaans which is my second language: I haven't found out which the other one is yet. 

Goeie More: [Ghoo-yah-more-rah] Good morning.
Hoe gaan dit? [Hoo ghaan dit] How are you (or how goes it?)
Dit gaan goed, dankie [Dit ghaan goed, dankie]: I'm OK (or it goes well, thanks)
Het jy lekker geslaap? [Het jy lekker gheslaap?]: Did you sleep well?
Is jy honger: Are you hungry?
Kom ons gaan mall toe: Let's go to the mall.
Kom ons gaan fliek: Let's go to the movies.
Kom ons luister musiek: Let's listen to some music.

When I was at university I dated a girl who was from South Africa by way of Zimbabwe.  I know a tiny amount of very basic dutch, but Iwas able to pick up Afrikaans  quite easily.  Of course once we stopped dating I lost most of it!
