Either he's dead or my watch has stopped!

« on: September 13, 2008, 10:34:16 PM »

Each year, particularly as I get older, I discover records or re-evaluate re-embrace records I had not appreciated, even ones I've owned for a long time... Ever own a record a long time and then get into it?  Do you find a handful of records each year that charge you up, get you excited?  (Excepting, of course, you Reverend Powell, tho' not jaded!)   Obviously, I like to mine the oldies.

We've had a lot of lists, yet I have been listening to the same six records for the last 9 months, so I thought, why not a thread?  No "10" or "100" just six right outta my a**...

AMY WINEHOUSE Back To Black
BIG STAR Third / Sister Lovers
BIG STAR Radio City
BIG STAR #1 Record
NICK DRAKE Pink Moon
JUNE CHRISTY Gone For The Day / Fair And Warmer

Have you had any records this year?  Please, no more than six!   Smile   Thumbup

I was afraid this was going to be a thread mentioning the top 6 albums of 2008--I'd have trouble with that one.  This one is easier.

1. Alfred Brendel, "BEETHOVEN: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 2 (Nos. 16-19, 21-23, 26)".  Great sonatas like "The Tempest" and "Les Adieuxs".

2. Alfred Brendel, "LISZT: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 / Piano Sonata / Totenta".  I'd never really listened to Liszt before and these concertos blew me away.

3. Johnny Cash, "American V: A Hundred Highways".  Finally got around to checking out the last release in this series.

4. Tom Waits, "Orphans".  I had a lot of these "rare" cuts already, but its still a bonanza for fans.

5. The Drive-by Truckers, "Pizza Deliverance".  This band's a welcome new discovery for me.

6. Ruth Brown, "Blues on Broadway."  Bluesy, soulful, sometimes risque takes on Broadway standards.

Too soon to tell because I just got it, but Southside Johnny and the La Bamba Big Band's "Grapefruit Moon: The Songs of Tom Waits" could well work its way onto this list before year's end.
