Lagomorphs: menace or underutilized resource?

« on: October 28, 2008, 07:37:51 AM »

We've had random thoughts, gross jokes, avatar explanations, etc., but I don't recall a topic about your favorite made-up names. Trevor's post in the screen name thread made me think about it, so props to Trevor.

He said he wanted to use Heywood Jablome. Other classics include Mike Hunt (though I did know a guy with this name), I.P. Freely, Ella Vader, and so on.

A guy I work with likes to make these up and book appointments for them to see if anyone notices. His favorite seems to be Phil McKracken. What are your favorites?

My next-door neighbor growing up was from a town called Hurricane, West Virginia, and he was a smart, dignified, down to earth  sort of man but verra, verra country. He had a first cousin who'd visit from time to time who was quite honestly named Hugh G. Juggs. He always said the middle initial with the first and last name, and it always sounded funny.

I remember Phil McKracken. He hung out with Ben Dover.

I will slightly change the names to the English language...

My sister used to live in an apartment and her landlady's name was actually "F**kert". Eventually she (the landlady) would get married, and instead of getting rid of this somewhat, hmm unfortunate name, she settled for a compound name. Much to our delight she married a Herr Faust ("Mr. Fist"), so her name ended up to be "Mrs. Fist-F**kert". My sister always had hysteric laughing fits when she got a letter from her...

IIRC there was a Texan with the last name of Hogg and he named his daughters
Ima Hogg and Youra Hogg.

Not a nice thing to do to your kids.

Well, if we're doing real people names, there was a famous millionaire called Armand Hammer. I think he was the inspiration for the millionaire character in Gorky Park, who was also an American who did a lot of business with the USSR.

Seems to me there was a real person named Donald Duck you used to hear about too.
