I was used to it being bigger than the others.

Something that others took notice of and would say stuff like 'that certainly stands out' or 'hell, you can see that even before you notice others'.

Among a group of average ones, it was noticeably bigger, and had a reputation for being bigger.

People would say 'now that's a hand full'.

But not any more.

It has shrunk in size. It is now no different that the smaller ones from before. Less to hold and much less noticeable; hell, it doesn't even stand out like it used to, but you have to look for it.

Of course I'm referring to Rolling Stone magazine.

Uh...what did you think I was talking abou.....

Has anybody else taken note of the now normal magazine sized Rolling Stone?

Past issues certainly have not been flying off the shelves where I am.

Will the new format even get noticed?

Will this go the same way that the format change with TV Guide went?

Does it make an ounce of difference?

It's not the size of the magazine it's how you handle it.

A lot of South African ladies' magazines have shrunk in this way too ~ when asked why, the publishers said "It's easier for the ladies to carry them in this format in their handbags."

Uhhh, yeah, OK: where do the guys put them then?  Buggedout Buggedout

Down the front of our pants.

This way, when someone asks 'what you got there?', we can reply with answers like a Hot Rod, an Easyrider, High Times, or two Rolling Stones and a Plank. TeddyR

In my case it would be two small round erasers and a tiny pencil down front there.  TeddyR

A courgette usually looks convincing...

Actually, a lot of U.K broadsheet/quality newspapers have been reduced to the smaller 'tabloid' size in recent years to increase their appeal to commuters who read them on public transport.

The most prominent thing about Rolling Stone magazine has been its cover.

Being on the cover of Rolling Stone has been such a watershed that not only was a song made about it, but just a year or so ago they had a retrospective about the cover of Rolling Stone which coincided with its anniversary. The magazine offices even have an extensive gallery, like a museum, where the history of the cover of Rolling Stone is prominently displayed.

It just seems odd more a magazine to take its own icon and do away with it.

They also missed the boat on a cross promotion. They have increased circulation with the new, and neutered, issue to coincide with an AC/DC promotion. Not only has the AC/DC promotion mostly run its course by the time the magazine is just now hitting the stands, and supposedly to be displayed prominently on the AC/DC pallets, but this issue's cover features Barack Obama, while the AC/DC cover is not due until the next issue.

Lesson: How to ruin a perfectly good magazine.

Just follow the examples set by TV Guide and Rolling Stone.

Quite frankly the magazine has been on a downhill course for a while. The cover and content have been progressively more pop media than pop culture and sales have been off and dropping. Of course, it is the type of magazine one would pick up at a music shop, newsstand, or convenience store, but those outlets have been disappearing in droves with the superstores putting them out of business, and it just does not sell in superstores.
