I've got a problem with my computer.  It has no sound.
I opened up the device manager and there's a yellow exclamation point next to where it says, "Multimedia audio controller".

I found my sound card driver disc and ran it but it didn't fix the problem.
I also opened my tower and made sure the sound card was properly seated.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

Try removing it.  Then let Windows rediscover and reinstall it.

Do you mean uninstall it?

Yes.  Delete (uninstall) if from your device manager and let Windows discover and set it up from the beginning again.

I'm assuming you already tried rebooting?

Yes. Uninstall all the sound card drivers. Shut the computer down and take the card out of the computer. Restart the computer, then shut it down. Then follow the card's installation instructions (some cards have you install the drivers first, then the card, while others have you do the opposite). Let us know if it works!

All of the stuff below was done before you guys offered help. (I suppose I should've waited)

I put the motherboard disc in and on the menu, it had an option to install SoundMax Digital Integrated Audio.
So I installed it and restarted my pc.
Now the "multimedia audio controller" is gone from the device manager and I still have no sound.   Bluesad

Should I uninstall the SoundMax and reinstall the sound card disc?

This all happened after not using my pc for months.  Ever since I got flooded out of my home, it hasn't been used.  Now I move into my new apt., hook it up and there's no sound.

Is the sound card separate, or is it integrated into the motherboard? If you installed the motherboard drivers, then that could well disable any separate sound card. If you want to use a sound card that is plugged into the motherboard, then yes, uninstall the motherboard sound driver, restart the computer, then install the driver that came with the sound card.

You guys aren't gonna believe this.

I had the speakers plugged into the wrong port!
Now I feel like smacking myself upside my own head.  Doh!

Sometimes the simplest solution is the correct one.  I have sound now.  Always did.
Thanks for the help.   Smile

I get a similar thing at work all the ferking time.  Phone calls from irate customers who complain their soundsystem isn't working, and after 5 minutes of troubleshooting we figure out it's not plugged in.  It's 90% of the time the easy answer!

I even had a customer once who unplugged her system from the power point to use another, smaller soundsystem in the same room.  That one boggled me since she had a perfectly good [and much more expensive] WORKING system there in the first place.  She of course called me to tell me her new shiny and expensive system was broken and can I come out immediately.  I did, found the problem, pointed it out and she was so embarrased that she gave me a nice bottle of wine for my troubles!   Thumbup
