Ye-es!

John Joseph Adams, editor
Wastelands :
stories of the Apocalypse

Thoughts
disappointments -- editors -- empathy = comprehension -- explorations -- far-fetched -- humorous--not -- ignorance -- interests -- intro. -- logic -- loners -- mistakes -- predictions -- questions -- realism -- religion -- ridiculousness -- saddest -- sex -- stories -- thinking -- unsubtle -- vibes -- and well-written?

What I cannot tell is whether the stories in this anthology are better written than the stories in the previous anthology read. What I can tell is there is less variety in the stories, as all the stories here are written within the past 2 decades of the last century, so there is less chronological difference in the stories, and that while there are such writers as Terry Brooks, who write stories of the Apocalypse from a fantasy stand-point, and writers like Richard Matheson, who write stories of the Apocalypse from a horror stand-point, all the stories here are from a science fiction stand-point. There is 1 difference between the stories, and we'll get to that next time.

To be continued . . .

Ye-es!

A continuation of Wastelands : stories of the Apocalypse. John Joseph Adams, editor.

As I said previously, some of the stories here can be divided into those with a religious slant and those with a non-religious slant, and I must admit, I prefer the stories with a religious slant, maybe because I prefer stories that are "quieter and softer," which I find the religious stories to be, or, it might be the logic expressed in one of the stories with a non-religious slant. Of course, this logic is not pertinent to all the stories with a non-religious slant, but . . .?! It is logic expressed by some of the characters in one of the stories.

!That a Christian can never made a decision based on logic and reason, because emotions affect the decision.

@That a non-Christian, or, at least a non-religious person always makes a decision based on logic and reason never emotion.

#Unless a person prays to the Christian God, he or she is never noticed by the said God.

$When we pray to the Christian God, and he does not answer, right away, that is because does not notice our prayer.

%When we die or taken up by God, while still alive, then we cease to exist in all forms both spiritual and physical.

^The Rapture as described by the author is the only Rapture possible.

&The Christian Bible is the only place to learn about the Christian God.

*Man is wiser than God.

?People who want to believe there is a God are gullible. They always believe what they are told.

Logical aren't they?

Next time: the 3rd of a half dozen.

Just finished THE FOLLY OF THE  WORLD, by Jesse Bullington.
It's a madcap account of the bastard son of a Dutch aristocrat, his murderous, mentally unstable male lover, and a feral peasant girl who plot to steal a signet ring from a drowned Dutch village and claim the family inheritance of a now-extinct line.  Fairly entertaining, although I could have done without the graphic descriptions of homosexual intercourse.

Ye-es!
The 3rd of a half dozen non-fiction books.

Sexpectations Girl/Sexpectations Boy

One of those 2 in one 1 books. "Turn it around. Turn it upside down." And you have your 2nd book.

From the title, one can see it is a sex guide for boys and girls, but . . .?! What makes this one interesting, or, maybe not, it is not written for American boys and girls, but . . .?! Aussie boys and girls. And even more interesting, or, maybe not, Aussie boys and girls, both gay and straight, have the same hopes, fears, desires, and questions that American boys and girls, both gay and straight, have.

And as always, when in Australia be careful what you do, where you do it. For just like in the U.S., what may be legal in one part of the country, may be illegal in another part of the country. For as in the states, the age of sexual consent varies from state to state in Australia. And as in some parts of the world, some parts of Australia require a higher age of consent for a homosexual act than they do for a heterosexual act.

Next time: 4th of a half dozen.

Ye-es!
The 4th of a half dozen of non-fiction books.

Elwes and Layden's
As You Wish :
Inconceivable Tales from the Making of "The Princess Bride"
Yes, that Elwes

Exhibits A, B, and C, as to why the quantity of money earned at the box office does not equal the quality of the film, or, why promotion is everything.

Here we have a film that . . .
. . . was one of the 10 Best Films of the Year,
. . . had one of the 10 Best Scripts of the Year,
. . . and had one of the 10 Best Swordfights of All time,
but . . .?! died at the box office, because no one knew how to promote it.

A Hollywood aphorism: "You are only as good as your last film."
Obviously, that is not apply here, as the only people involved in this, both behind and in front of the camera, who do not have something on his or her plate this year or next, excluding those that are deceased, of course, are . . .

actor Christopher Guest, who has apparently not worked since 2013
and producer Andy Scheinman who has apparently not done anything since 2014.

And no wonder Cary Elwes has been so successful, for as an actor, he's quite a mimic. You read this, and when he channels director Rob Reiner, you do not hear Cary channeling Rob, but Rob himself.

SONS OF CAESAR: IMPERIAL ROME'S FIRST DYNASTY by Philip Matyszak

This was a fascinating look at Rome's ruling family from 48 BC until 68 AD - the Julio-Claudians.
First the author looks at the history of Rome's two oldest and most powerful Patrician families, the Julii and the Claudii.
Then he embarks on a lively look at the life of Julius Caesar, who was not an emperor but created the conditions that allowed the Principate to come into being.  After that, he discusses the reign of Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero, the last Julio-Claudian emperor.
Not too long (indeed, not long enough for this Romanophile), but very informative and written in a wry, entertaining fashion, this is a good primer on how one family took a fractious Republic and turned it into a surprisingly well-run Empire.  Great for Roman history buffs!

Ye-es!
The 6th of a half dozen non-fiction

Ruth Goodman's
How to be a Victorian :
a dawn-to-dusk guide to Victorian life
3 more non-fiction

From the years 1826 to 1911.

Normally, when a writer writes about something they have personally done, my esteem for them goes up. Yet . . .?! When she writes about something she has done, my esteem for her goes down. Still . . .?! She has written the most complete book I have seen to date about the Victorian Age, as she writes about everything, and I do mean everything.

abortion -- the age of consent
bodily functions -- breast feeding
contraception
the double standard
impotence
laxatives and colonic irrigation
masturbation -- menstruation
nudity
prostitution (both male and female)
sexuality, including homosexuality -- skinny dipping
toilets
underwear
and venereal diseases

The life that our Victorian ancestors lived come across as mindboggling and heartbreaking, but . . .?! They lived long enough to sire future generations, including us.

Though the most horrendous thing about it was how often when nearly anyone took a progressive step forward to improve life, they were met with opposition.

I read that book too and my reaction was exactly like it sounds yours was. I like Ruth Goodman and enjoy her books and shows (The Victorian Farm, The Edwardian Farm, The Victorian Pharmacy, etc.) but when she got to that one part in this where she said she went four months without bathing, just buffing off with a dry cloth "and nobody noticed" I kind of went, "....huh." And that was the moment dear Ruth Goodman jumped the sharks!

Ye-es!
6 fiction - 1 non-fiction

The fiction

Cara Black's
Murder in Champ de Mars
15th in the Aimee Leduc series
Each title named after an area in Paris.
And each title comes with a contest that'll net one a vacation in Paris with a personal tour of Paris by the writer.

Elly Griffith's
The Janus Stone
2nd in the Ruth Galloway series
With this, the only one I have not read in the series is the 1st title in the series

Michael Pearce's
The Mouth of the Crocodile
6th of the recent titles in the Mamur Zapt series

Andrew Klavan's
Werewolf cop :
a novel
24 more fiction by the writer

P.J. Brackston's
Gretel and the Case of the Missing Frog Prints
in the Brothers Grimm series
Part comedy, part fact, part fantasy, part fiction, part mystery, and a little part of almost everything.
Though to get a better perspective of Hansel and Gretel as adults, try the film Hansel and Gretel : Witch hunters

And the non-fiction

James Herriot's
Favorite dog stories
reprint edition
8 more books for adults
9 more books for children
To get an idea of the area which he was writing about, then travel to Thirsk in the Yorkshire Dales. Of course, there have been some changes in the decades, since he began writing about the area.

Next time: India's 9/11.
